Of course driving through moving floodwaters or water of unknown depth in any vehicle is risky, but Skagit County Commissioner Lisa Janicki Demonstrated her EV ignorance during a press conference today with Governor Ferguson, as while pleading with people not to drive with floodwaters, expressed with particular exasperation that she saw a Tesla driving through water!
To which I would respond yeah, so?
Modern EVs are better suited to driving through water than most any comparable infernal combustion vehicles, though yes, unfortunately Toyota’s EV intransigence means we don’t have access to an electric Hilux yet, so that diesel remains the king of river fording!
HowEVer, my diminutive BAJA MiEV that may have only been rated for 30 cm (11.8”) of water crossing from the factory due to the air inlet location on its air-conditioned battery, the BAJA is now good for at least 17” of water fording after it’s suspension lift and taller tires.
I’m also happy to report that though the Model S dEVelops a dramatic bow wave that somehow comes up through the wheel wells and obscures the windshield when hitting just a few inches of water at any speed, the BAJA windscreen stays dry, or at least I haven’t managed to wash it yet with EVen the most energetic water entries. Lastly, with the most vulnerable electronic modules inside the passenger compartment (under the rear seat) and only a few pieces under the hood of this RWD EV with rear motor, rear inverter, rear charger and rear cable connections to the battery pack, I’m eager to continue pushing its limits!
Drive Safely,
Jay
