2026 Greenwood Car Show

It’s in the history books and I haven’t heard a word about the SEVA section this year. How was the show? Has anyone who taking pictures of the EV section posted them?

The Green green S-10 made it to the show in good shape and ran well, getting there. As many can recall and as seen in the photo, it was a good exhibit. It was a long day for me and I'm thankful for the energy to talk to people nearly non-stop all day. This is my 13th Greenwood Car Show. I want to mention a rant and a rave. 

Starting with rave: When I look around at the SEVA Evs at Greenwood, I see us owners on our feet answering questions, talking and otherwise engaging the public. When I go for a walk, I see owners of hot rods sitting in chairs, seeming not too approachable watching the onlookers pass by. I think this is a big thing and my hat's off to all of you for bringing the "word" to the public. I noticed this at my first Greenwood and every show after. 

Now rant: Level 2 charging stations! Being a conversion, I can't use fast charging. I can use 120 volt or 240 volt only. Knowing its unlikely that I can do a round trip to Bothell on a single charge, I scoped out 7 ChargePoint public charging stations that are on the way home from Greenwood. I used both PlugShare and ChargePoint apps. I'm set, right? Wrong! I was set for a near disaster. 

The first two ChargePoint stations were near 145^th and Aurora. I used to charge at the Walgreens there but they took it out. So, I have the two at this park. They were ChargePoint stations with a branding: "Seattle City Light". There was only one and it was not in use. There were two ways to activate it: ChargePoint app or credit card. The ChargePoint on my iPhone could "see" the charger but could not connect and displayed "insufficient funds to enable charging (or something like that) even though the card in my Apple Pay wallet is good. So, I dialed the number thinking that I can enter my card number but the phone menu did not include that. Its for when VISA blocks your card. 

What next? A few blocks south on Aurora is a big Dodge Jeep dealership with 5 (yes, 5) ChargePoints and the app said all 5 were available. The photo showed regular ChargePoint stations so I was encouraged. Upon arriving I asked inside to use a charging station for 45 min because I'm really low on charge. I'm passed on to the manager who flatly refused to allow me to hook up and charge. I showed him both PlugShare and ChargePoint apps but he said no way. I offered $20 for $2 worth of electricity but no. 

Nothing left but try to make it home. From 145^th and Aurora, if I head east on 145th, its downhill nearly all the way to Bothell and some steep climbs to my house. I made it as far as the Juanita Safeway (3 miles from home) and some cells were kicking low to 2 volts. AAA to the rescue. After a looong charge, all is well. I didn't loose those two cells and cleared the low voltage alarm. 

So, between Greenwood Ave and Bothell, 17 miles, no Level II charging available. My option would have been to head to the next nearest Level II but that gamble would have put me farther from home and that AAA ride would have been expensive. 

Stephen, when you asked at Greenwood if I needed to charge, I should have said yes!

The Good: Had a grand time at the 6/28/2026 Greenwood Car Show. The Cybertruck and Sparrow were both popular. (Of course, I never thought to take a picture of the setup.)

I think the Sparrow was the most photographed vehicle at the show. Hundreds took pictures of it.

Lots of fun discussions about the cars and my "Big Kitties" whose photos were on the truck. (along with some extra photo pages taped to the side.)

The Bad: Shortly after leaving the show, I made a turn - and the strap holding the rear wheel of the Sparrow in place - broke.

It apparently rolled forward on the trailer, hit the winch pretty hard, then tipped off to the right side of the trailer - still attached by the winch cable.

It fell on it's side beside the trailer, and as I realized what was happening and pulled over to stop - the Sparrow hit a street sign. Hard. The sign broke the windshield and body frame, and was wedged into the car.

Short after I called AAA to see if I could get a tow truck to lift it back up onto the trailer, several people who had seen the bird at the show, and knew me - pulled up to help.

4 of us were able to pull the sign out of the car, and roll it back onto it's wheels. Then (since I had the ramps with me) were able to get it back onto the trailer.

I think I'm still in some shock. As you can see from the photos, the bird is a mess.  The windshield is the only window broken.  Somehow the sign post did NOT break the door.  Door is just gouged from sliding on the pavement.

Should be repairable - but a lot of work.

Note: I just unloaded it at home. One of the things recovered was part of the broken strap. It broke right at the point where it crossed the inside of the rear tire rim. A fairly clean break. ALSO when I removed the straps used to get it home - one of those was already 1/2 cut through.

I have towed this this load many times - and I've never found a strap cut previously. I'm starting to wonder if there is just one section of the rim that has a sharp edge in the middle somewhere. (It seems weird that I hit the same issue twice in a row, after a dozen times of NOT hitting it.)

Bummer, Larry.  In my experience, the City Light Chargepoint stations won't accept either a Chargepoint card, a credit card, or Wallet on an iPhone — even though they appear to have hardware which should accept all of those.  They accept only the start sequence from the Chargepoint app, but you have to have a payment method set up in advance in your Chargepoint account.  Paypal is supposed to be accepted as a payment method, but it has sometimes failed (with the error apparently on Chargepoint's end) and I removed it.

FWIW the City Light streetside stations closest to the show probably are the two north of the lake, 407 NE Maple Leaf Place.  They work fine with a configured Chargepoint app.  About three blocks from them is a single Level 2 non-networked EVSE provided by the church at 7400 Woodlawn Ave NE, open to the public.  Plugshare shows a City Light EVSE at 311 N 45th.  And the zoo still has their stations in one of the lots, though you have to pay for both parking and charging.

Ahh, the trials and tribulations of attending the nig shows!

One of my favorite selling points for EV's is that if you are ever in a real pinch (and have a 120V charge connection), you can do a slower (level 1) charge at almost any 120V outlet. Yes, it takes twice as long as the favored level2, but if you are just trying to get to the preferred charging location, you will make it. In the 15 years since we drove the 1st generation Leaf, I have only had to resort this once, but it sure was nice to have the ability! (We charged from the outside of a Chevron station! A great story!!!

I have found a few wrecking yards that will sell the chargers that came with wrecked EV's for pretty cheap.

Of  course, there are several online suppliers as well, if you prefer. 

Less expensive than replacing damaged cells.

Aaahhh. Tom: This brings back Fond Memories.   Going back further than the LEAF WORLD, back to 1981 !!  

Limping one of our ( Rnault ) Lectric Lepard's  home after venturing out close to the LIMITS,  we could not climb the hill from 25th Ave. NE,  ( U - Village ) back up to our home on 32nd Ave NE.

But wait there was a gas station, but it was CLOSED, but wait !!!   The Coke Machine was still gleaming in the dark !  So, lucky for me, the Lectric Leopard chargers were just built into the car, and needed just simple 120 V AC

Unplugging the coke machine and plugging in my car seemed the ONLY way  home.  

One half hour later, we put our portable 120 V extension cord back in the car,  plugged the coke machine back to the wall outlet, and limped home safely, with no one else worse for the experience.

And the coke's were still cold !!!

Hi all,

Mark Shaw's bespoke chassis/skateboard with Tesla Model 3 components ended up being my first load on my new trailer that was pulled behind the X.  This "show and tell" exhibit was very popular among those who attended the GreenWood  Car Show.  When finished, his grandfather's farm truck, a 1952 International pickup, will hide the Tesla underneath. 

Most importantly it became an inspiration for Mark, because the most asked question to him was the attendees, Will you have it finished for next year's show?
