Folks,

Interesting point. In the Lloyd Shaw version referenced, Bill Litchman
plays with the dancers the third and fourth times thru by mixing up the
order of who chains over when. It keeps the dance interesting without
having to introduce 3 new figures and without having to mess up the
metering of the words. This is a great dance for teaching ladies chain.

Hi Calvin,

Have you found this music of the song “Just Because”:

I haven’t purchased it yet (I may have a copy at home), but the quality seems good.

You have inspired me to learn this sining call for my new group of dancers. We are just now starting to dance again, small group, in my home.

Eva:

When I first started calling I had “Just Because” on the Windsor label. Used the same figure but I like the music that you have better. Is that on any particular label that is available? Thanks.

Hi Mike,

The version I already have is from a cassette tape made by “Traditional Caller Productions”, TC123, with caller Bob Dalsemer and band members Peter Barnes, Steve Hickman, Jack O'Connor, Bill Tomczak.  Bob Dalsemer is a traditional contra and square dance caller who was calling in the Baltimore/Maryland area when I was dancing traditional squares and contras there. The band members are extremely talented. I digitized the cassette tape, but, am out of town right now, so I can’t listen to it so see if it is a good enough quality to use.

I’m rather certain the version on DoSaDo.com is the same one.  I like the instrumentation of Bob Dalsemer's version better than the Lloyd Shaw version, I’m sure, because it’s how it was played when I danced to it, many a time. You can buy the Bob Dalsemer version off of DoSaDo.com.  Bob produced two book’s with music, both instrumental and called:  “smoke on the water” and “When the work’s all done”.

Apparently DoSaDo.com has a traditional category, and all of Bob Dalsemer’s stuff from these 2 collections is there.

Hi Jeff and all:

Jeff: Thanks for the information. I did not know about the traditional music on Dosado music. I wonder how many other callers do not know about it? Why is it kept under the radar, so to speak.? This is great stuff, especially for square dance parties. Paul should really publicize this.

There appears to be a label that "has kept under the radar" that almost no one knows about simply called "Traditional Productions". You can find a listing of other tracks at
The listing of tracks is very interesting!

I believe Daryl Clendenin recorded a good version 7X through without a key change, but I am not sure of the label.
ESP Records also has a great version with a key change for the last break.

Mike,
This collection of traditional music has been available in the past in CD form.  Bob Dalsemer calls all the recorded tracks and the instrumental versions are great.  I do use this music to call one-nighters but there are several tracks good for club use.
There is another collection that is similar in nature, but includes all different tunes.
Highly recommended,
