Hello SARA,

I’m working with a local organization and their archives which contains several reels of film (moving image).  Are there any reputable companies you would recommend to digitize those reels of film?

Much appreciated,

Leslie

Locally, Matson Multimedia is a good go-to.
Several archives in SA have used them over the years.

In Austin, Texas Archive of the Moving Image is also very reputable.

Leslie,

I have used Matson Multimedia, for both personal old 8mm film and VHS for work. I was very happy with their work.

I just recently had a couple of very old reels, digitized, transcribed, and put onto archival CDs by George blood. Their customer service and attention to detail was fantastic.

This is only slightly relevant to George Blood, but Laurel Day, my rep there, and was on Jeopardy in February. :-D

They did a great job, but yes, a little pricey.

George Blood is also excellent, if a bit pricier than most -- he 's been in this biz for decades (he did some work for the audiovisual archives where I worked in the northeast in 2003).

Another note, Leslie -- be sure to let the vendor know what deliverables you want - they will talk it over with you. I usually want .mp4s (compressed) for sharing and .movs (least compressed) for an archival master. Transcription is something I don't usually ask for. And, for an archives or personally, I never ask for copies on CD, as CDs (even those called 'gold') are an expense I don't want and the medium is most definitely not archival.
What you need

I was an audiovisual archivist for 12 years at a previous archives, and learned this along the way, which included multiple trainings from NEDCC on the subject.

I used Matson Multimedia several years ago and was pleased with the results.  I also participated in the Texas Archive of the Moving Image’s Texas Film Round-Up (also includes video).  It’s free but can take several months to get your digital copies.  If you’re not in a hurry, you may want to see if you meet their criteria: https://texasarchive.org/round-up.

Best,

Beth
