Reminder - Monday Walking Audit in Stroudwater

Hi all,

We're looking forward to seeing you on Monday, June 27th at 5:30 at the parking lot across the street from the Oxford-Cumberland Canal Trailhead. The parking lot will be on the left if you are coming from Portland (see picture below). Take care turning into the lot - it is a sharp turn off of a curve in the road. If you go over the bridge over interstate 95 you've gone too far!

The route is mapped out below. It is a long walk (close to 3 miles). Please bring water and good walking shoes!

Bummed I missed this! That's what I get for not paying attention recently. I could have totally done it, too, since my office is now at the Unum campus, and I was in the office today.

Anyway, you may have already flagged this one, but in case not, I'll contribute notes on the intersection below. I have had occasion to take the Metro bus from the office into Portland, usually by the bus stop shown in the yellow square in the second map below.

Things to note:

1. There is no sidewalk on the inbound side of this road, leading up to the bus stop.
2. Because of that, there are no marked crosswalks connecting to that corner, therefore no marked nor signalized way to get to that bus stop from 3 of the 4 approach directions (and no sidewalk on the 4th).

I'll note as a postscript, because this was not on your route, that a similar problem exists at a bus stop at the other Unum entrance/exit, onto Outer Congress Street. The bus stop on the far side of the driveway, which is another inbound route, also has no sidewalk, and no marked crosswalk or signal to assist bus users from the office complex, like me, in getting across the street to it. This is the same one I bitched about last winter, because it is also not on the regular shoveling out schedule after a snowstorm. The only time it was shoveled the whole winter was when I complained about it. Otherwise, one must stand on top of the snow pile to wait for the bus. A wheelchair user would have to sit on the side of the travel lane, because there isn't even a shoulder. (I could either haul my bike up on top of the snow bank, or leave it sitting at the edge of the travel lane, with its lights on if dark, as it is at winter evening commute time.)

Looking forward to the group's findings in this Stroudwater audit. The Congress Street portion in particular seems ripe for improvement. 

To piggyback on John's notes (welcome to the Unum campus, by the way!) I fully agree with the challenges of those two intersections out of the Unum campus. 

The crosswalk route marked #1 here currently has a pedestrian walk signal that fires at the same time the left-turning traffic's green arrow switches to a normal green light, which is also when the right-turning traffic from the Jetport gets a green light. This timing is highly irregular and puts the most vulnerable road users in danger from multiple sides. The unmarked crossing #2 here is much safer in terms of fewer conflicts and deserves its own signal. My two cents.
