Hi folks,

On Monday, January 12th at 6 PM we're co-hosting a debrief and discussion about GPCOG and the BCM's traffic calming projects from last summer.  This will be followed by a short general PBPAC meeting.

We’ll be meeting at the offices of the Greater Portland Council of Governments:

Greater Portland Council of Governments, 970 Baxter Blvd # 201, Portland, ME 04103
Casco Bay Room: Second floor, accessible by stairs or elevator

Agenda can be found here: PBPAC AGENDA: 01:12:26

From Andrew Zarro, director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine:

As many of you know, GPCOG and BCM worked with municipalities and DOT in 2025 on several Safe Street for All traffic calming installations. As we look ahead to the 2026 projects, we are hosting a small, in-person gathering to hear directly from people who regularly bike and walk along Washington Ave and interacted with this summer’s installation.

While we received many helpful survey responses, we want to take time to listen more deeply to lived experiences, sticking points, and lessons learned.

This discussion is intended for people who commute, bike, or walk in this corridor and have firsthand experience to share. Our goal is to gather tangible, practical feedback that can directly inform future designs and implementation.

After that we’ll be holding a vote on our priorities for 2026, which will shape our advocacy to the Portland City Council, GP METRO and the State of Maine.

We will also be taking nominations for Officer positions, and are open to volunteers for the District Captain positions.

We will be working to keep the meeting as short and sweet as possible, but let us know if there is anything else that needs to be discussed in January.  Our next meeting will likely be on February 9th.

Thanks,

~Winston

Thanks, Winston.

Were these traffic calming projects demonstrations or permanent installations?

Thank you.

Hi folks,
I'm looking forward to the meeting & traffic calming debrief and discussion tomorrow evening!

John Clark, Steven Scharf and I had a productive work session this morning and I think we've got a 2 page document outlining our priorities for 2026 ready for us to vote on and send to the S&T committee after tomorrow's meeting; we can work on getting an expanded version up on the website and out to the council after that, but getting this out to the S&T committee will be very helpful.

Getting to the GPCOG headquarters by bike:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53705114

If you're unfamiliar with the area it can be a little confusing.

The best way to access for pedestrians or cyclists is the back way in; if you continue straight after crossing Tukey's bridge you'll come to a ramp and several staircases leading up to the parking lot behind the GPCOG headquarters and the Other Side Diner. That allows you to access the parking lot without dealing with fast and aggressive traffic on Bates Street.

Taking the bus, it looks like the 7 or the 9B would both work, but will have you arriving a little early.
The 7 might be the best bet, arriving at Veranda & Sherwood and walking back across the intersection of Washington and Veranda.  One or more of us will be a little early, so arriving 10 minutes early on the bus should be fine.

I think there's ample parking for anyone driving.

Safe journeys, and I'll see some of you tomorrow!

~Winston
