Hi folks,
At our meeting on Monday we voted to send a letter to remind the council of our Parking Policy Proposal, since they are considering changes to the parking policies.

Their changes would include extending the hours of enforcement by 1 hour on regular parking days and charging for parking on Sunday.  The council's finance committee decided to drop Sunday for now at their last meeting.

We voted to suggest that they only charge for Sunday seasonally, thus implementing some form of the dynamic pricing we suggest in our policy proposal.

We decided to wait until these changes had an order number to send the letter; the agenda was published late, and there is no order number about parking policies, though, the money that would be raised from their proposed changes is still in the budget (removing it would cause further property tax increases, or cutting some service or other), so we can presume that they will discuss it.  The finance committee says they plan to in their latest meeting.

This is the time stamp of the video.  https://portlandme.portal.civicclerk.com/event/9603/media 1:12:23 to 1:18:00 (thanks to Steven for the timestamp).

We should still furnish the council with the policy proposal we worked on in 2022, as it is an in depth report which we spent some time on, and so I plan to send the letter anyway, without an order number.  Because of the council rules, I will send the letter a few minutes before Noon today, so there's very little time for any of you to object, but if you voted at the meeting on Monday please let me know if you have any objection to me sending the letter.

I agree with sending the letter.

Note, I am opposed to Sunday parking fees for two reasons.  One the affect on religious orgs who services sometimes run into the afternoon.  Sunday Football, we should not be discouraging anyone from coming into the city on weekends.  They want easy street parking and will balk at having to pay.  As one who goes out to bars/restaurants watch sports, I can tell you most of the folks at the sports bars are from outside the city and will NEVER use public transportation.  They will go elsewhere.

Some clarifications
The committee did not actually kill the Sunday part as they made no motion on the matter and left it to the council meeting to put forward an amendment, but the orders submitted for approval show no street parking changes and the budget has only a small change related to another amendment.

This change was a total turn around from the previous meeting so their has been some heavy lobbying against it.  Even Wes is going along with the changes.

There are two opportunities to comment on the city budget, tommorrow night at 5:00 pm and Monday June 1, 2026 at 5:00 pm.
