New bus line will connect Scarborough and Portland

After I sent it, I realized I need to add to it.

"Expanding southward is huge news for us. There are a lot of destinations in South Portland and Scarborough that we hope to pick up along this route, namely the Downs development, MaineHealth campus in Scarborough, Thornton Heights in South Portland, potentially the VA center over here in Portland,” said Mike Tremblay, the director of transit development for Greater Portland Metro.

Funding for the project will come from the Maine Turnpike Authority, MaineDOT, and the town of Scarborough.

When I heard about this, my ideal would for it to run along West Commercial Street, which is implied above.  The question is how far down Commercial Street should it go?

I would say Franklin Street and then run up to Congress Street.

On a side note, the SoPo bus routes need a significant reworking.  They meander through neighborhoods making a trip from the Mall to over an hour.

METRO posted a press release on their own website too:

They've also posted a survey about where the new route should go – it sounds like they're coordinating this new route with a "reevaluation of routes in South Portland." Which makes sense – if this new route goes through Thornton Heights, the current South Portland Route 24 might need to make that diversion any longer.
