Shabbat Parshat Vayikra 5780
Friday Erev Shabbat Candle lighting 6:51pm
----
From The Desk of Rabbi Doug Zelden
Rav, Congregation
Or Menorah
Dear Or Menorah Family,
It will be our second Shabbat of isolation, and I know some of you are feeling the fright and pressure of preparing
for Pesach and being without guests, without extended family, without Minyanim, and
without face-to-face interactions. It is even scary to go shopping in public!
Kol Tuv and Jewel do deliveries, and you can check out Instacart for numerous
store deliveries and Amazon for Whole Foods and more.
You can also pick up
on-line orders ready for you from Jewel and from Mariano’s, as well as from
Walmart. I’ve also sent out information
about Jewish community updates and also for those who need assistance in the
community – see www.jewishchicago.info for more information. I encourage you all to use Facebook, Zoom,
YouTube and email, to be part of the on-line Torah learning I’ve shared with you by email, and to always keep the
faith!
Remember we are all #inthistogether.
Call me anytime!-Rabbi Doug Zelden
rabb...@ormenorah.comPS I will continue to share sharing much Torah learning on line and updates regularly. If you’d also like to join me on my FaceBook Live - learning and events - please friend me on Facebook at TVRABBI DOUG, and you can see my tv show weekly on Mondays channel 19 at 8:30pm or at www.tvrabbi.com anytime.

Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Shabbat Parshat Vayikra
And every meal offering of yours
shall you salt; neither shall you allow the salt of the covenant of your God to
be lacking from your meal offering; upon all your offerings shall you offer
salt. Leviticus
2:13
Rashi comments that “... a covenant
was established with salt from the six days of creation, when the lower waters
[those of the oceans]
received assurance that they would be offered on the
Mizbeach in the form of salt.”
Our Sages understood that the salt which was preferred for salting the
sacrifices was sea salt, not salt extracted from dry land. As the Silverman
edition of Rashi translates that; the “lower waters” [see Genesis 1:7] were
dissatisfied that they had been assigned a place on earth and not in Shamayim,
whereupon Hashem made this assurance mentioned by Rashi. Based upon this, Rashi’s
comment teaches us that salting the sacrifices symbolizes combining the
heavenly and earthly, which is the essential function of the Mishkan and
Mikdash [Tabernacle and Temple]. There is an additional lesson we can learn from the Torah’s requirement
to salt the sacrifices . Just as salt, the biblical preservative, par
excellence, not only preserved, but enhanced the sacrifices, the sacrifices in
the Mishkan and
Beit HaMikdash, or their contemporary equivalent today, serving God in
general with Tfilah and Avodah,
Worshiping Hashem and strict practice of the
Torah, preserves and enhances our lives.
What an auspicious time in history to keep this in mind!
