I recently posted a make of a 4-string version, but I'm already thinking about making another, except this time a 5-string model (lol- just when I thought I was done).  There are a couple of questions I have:

  1. Would printing just the neck in PETG affect sound or durability (asking because of color options)?
  2. Would a "short scale" viola C string work as the fifth string? The only "violin" C strings or 5-string sets I can find are fairly expensive.
  3. Is the only way to get five 6b or 6w tuners to buy two packs of four?

On a side note, I have to mention that when I went to my local violin shop for a new bow, I noticed that they had a modular fiddle there!  They told me that someone who was "into 3D printing" gave it to them.  Here's a picture of it (maybe someone here will even recognize it):

I printed the neck in PETG and it has held up well.  It stays in tune better than any of my wood violins.  A viola C string is what you should get for the 5th string.  I have the same question about the tuners... it would be nice to not have to buy 8 of them.

The violin in the photo, did the neck and pegs have that marbled look or is there something else going on with the photo?

Thanks for the feedback.  I took the picture of the violin through the top of the scratched glass case it was in, which is probably what you're seeing in the photo.
