Some of you may remember that I bought a Helios64 NAS from kobol.io.
Like many companies starting out before COVID-19 hit they closed up
shop. When I received some 1TB Western Digital Red NAS hard drives from
my son after he upgraded his NAS  I decided to use them in the orphaned
hardware.

The next issue is that the Armbian Linux distribution for my Helios64
NAS (Rockchip RK3399 based) has no maintainer so I decided to move the
hard drives my son gave me to a Dell PC with an i7 CPU and 12 GB of RAM
and load TrueNAS SCALE.

After a bit of struggling with a  TrueNAS SCALE install that wouldn't
boot I found one of the SATA cables on the motherboard was not fully
seated. I installed TrueNAS SCALE again and this time it boots. One step
forward. My next problem to resolve is that only one of the two storage
disks shows up in the web gui. I see all the drives at the command line
but not in the gui. It turned out that what I saw in the gui  was the
FlexDock (Dell's name for what you plug SD cards into). Back to the same
problem of making the storage drives visible in the gui. After more
research I decided to see if a USB hard drive would show up in the Gui.
It did along with the two storage drives. I used the drives to create a
mirrored dataset then created a NFS share. With my first goal of setting
up a NAS to share files is accomplished I can look at the applications I
can run on my TrueNAS SCALE server.

Having Fun,

You could get me to buy anything if you told me the firmware was written in COBOL.

Is there another Linux that might have run on there? Or did they have custom drivers and stuff? Seems like a shame to consign such a handsome machine to the Closet of Unused Computers.

Hello Glenn,

Sorry, no firmware written in COBOL.

I dug around a bit and Armbian was the best solution since I do not know enough to do all the support myself. I really like the hardware and was willing to use an orphaned system as long as I could find a supported Operating System. The drive cage uses standard SATA cables for the wiring harness so I may look for a replacement system board before I recycle it.
