boundary issues on glazing

Hi All,

This is the first time in the group. Hope I can find solution to the the critical issues that I have at the moment.

I have model the glazing to the extrusion and a message pop up while I click "Calculate" in THERM. 

This file has Glazing System Boundary Condition names (which are generated when the glazing system is imported from WINDOW) that do not match the name of the Glazing System.

To use the WINDOW-generated Boundary Conditions for the Glazing System, regenerate the boundry conditions.

To keep the non-WINDOW-generated Boundary Conditions for the Glazing System. go to Options > Preferences > THERM File Options and change the setting that enforces this rule.

Above pop-up message, it warns me something I did wrong but I couldn't figure it out.

Please help if you know the issue.

Hello! Try to check boundary condition in window. It is must be the same like in therm. Also check sides of the boundary conditions.

THERM brings in the boundary conditions defined in WINDOW when a glazing system is imported into THERM. 

If you want to keep those boundary conditions, you can regenerate the boundary conditions and THERM should pick up the WINDOW bcs.

If you want to define your own boundary conditions, you can do as the message says an change your preferences to not do that check. 

I am happy to look at your file if you want me to.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried but I could not find boundry properties to be set-up from WINDOW. Currently I have both 7.7 and 8.0 version of WINDOW and THERM installed in my computer.

I was given a glass that is not yet registered on the glazing library. So I find the closest combined DGU's U-value on WINDOW. Then, I saved the WINDOW file .mdb format (the only format available).

I moved onto THERM and use the existing previous file that someone created and replaced with the glazing. Somehow, I might not doing it properly from here on because I am not sure how to import WINDOW file to THERM on the glazing part. 

I have followed the manual provided and created glazing system from "WINDOW Glazing System Library", somehow I got this message pop-up. "Trouble reading WINDOW database. This may be an older version of a WINDOW database that is not supported by this version of THERM. Contact LBNL for further information."

From here that the issue I have now.

I suspect it might have to do with THERM file when they created must be different version to 7.7 I have installed. However I have also tried on the THERM 8.0, still having this same message. 

Sorry I could not upload the WINDOW file due too 300Mb+in size.

First, you need to be using the same version of WINDOW and THERM together, so 7.7 (or maybe you should upgrade to 7.8 for each, which has a lot of fixed bugs).

Generally you get the message in THERM about an older WINDOW database when you are not using the same version of WINDOW as THERM.

If you created the glazing system in WINDOW, calculated it and saved it, THERM should be able to import it. 

The NFRC Simulation Manual describes the process of importing a WINDOW glazing system into THERM starting on page 6-16.

I would suggest NOT using THERM / WINDOW 8.0, as it is not really needed unless you are interested in modeling transient moisture, and it won't do that model for glazing systems anyway. 

So make sure that you are using either WINDOW 7.7 and THERM 7.7 together, or WINDOW 7.8 and THERM 7.8 together.

You might want to check to make sure your boundary conditions are set properly and that all the materials are correctly defined.

Thank you for your advises, now it's working fine after I have uninstall all the Window and THERM, then installed the latest version, everything are working fine including inserting glazing option through calculation the result. 

However, I got some minor issue that the result is too low on the Frame about 3.5, but normally we should get about 14-16. Not sure what I have done wrong here.

I am back to the pop up message"Model geormetry and boundary conditions need to be properly defined before a calculation can be performed.

When I click on BC icon, another message comes up. "The geometry contains overlapping regions. The edges surrounding these regions will be highlighted in red. You must fix this problem before simulating. ID (s) 65,66,67,68,74,75,76." But I could see any red circle on my file.

Not sure what to do next.

HI Robin, I solved above problems. 

However, when I click "Calculation" I have this message pop up " There are no Ufactor tags defined".

Not sure how to resolve this. I will also try find solution for this issue.

You don't have to define U-factor tags if you don't want the program to calculate U-factors. So that message is informational, not an error message.

See section 6.5.2, page 6-33, of the THERM / WINDOW Simulation Manual
