Facial recognition and financial network applications both strike me as top tier SECURITY products.  Would the users of such applications be comfortable with "much cheaper" computer power cobbled together by using off duty machines?  Maybe.  But there is a hitch in the expectations that will have to bridged deftly.

Would there not be security benefits to combining encryption (which they mention) with compartmentalization (which they only imply)? I suppose a fair amount can be learned from what’s running on a given set of servers, but it would be a fragment of the whole picture.

I can also think of some commercial uses for good facial recognition.
