Republicans are in an uproar that guns will not be allowed into the Quicken Loans Arena during the Republican National Convention:

This is a direct affront to the Second Amendment and puts all attendees at risk. As the National Rifle Association has made clear, "gun-free zones" such as the Quicken Loans Arena are "the worst and most dangerous of all lies." The NRA, our leading defender of gun rights, has also correctly pointed out that "gun free zones... tell every insane killer in America... (the) safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk."

The Secret Service supports the arena's restriction:

Title 18 United States Code Sections 3056 and 1752 provides the Secret Service authority to preclude firearms from entering sites visited by our protectees, including those located in open-carry states. Only authorized law enforcement personnel working in conjunction with the Secret Service for a particular event may carry a firearm inside of the protected site. The Secret Service works closely with our local law enforcement partners in each state to ensure a safe environment for our protectees and the public. Individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint, regardless of whether they possess a ticket to the event.

According to the U.S. Secret Service:

Under 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7), "[m]ajor Presidential and Vice Presidential [sic] candidates," as identified by the Secretary of Homeland Security, are eligible for Secret Service protection.

Title 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7) authorizes the U.S. Secret Service to provide protection for major presidential and vice presidential candidates:
    • Protection is authorized by the DHS Secretary after consultation with the Congressional Advisory Committee
    • The Congressional Advisory Committee includes: Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Minority Leader, and one additional member selected by the other
Criteria have been established to assist the DHS Secretary and the advisory committee in their decision making (as of 2008). Candidates must:
    • Be publically announced
    • Have some degree of prominence as shown by opinion polls
    • Be actively campaigning and entered in at least 10 state primaries
    • Be seeking the nomination of a qualified party
    • Have qualified for matching funds in the amount of at least $100,000
    • Have received contributions totaling $10 million
Title 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7) states that the U.S. Secret Service is also authroized to protect spouses of major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, as identified by the DHS Secretary, within 120 days of the general Presidential election. Some candidates have received protection earlier in the campaign pursuant to Presidential memoranda.

This must be one of those "out yourself" issues -- where a passionate protest reveals a ghastly blind spot that destroys a candidate.  Threatened worst is Cruz, not Trump.  Cruz is the "go to guy" on guns for most movement conservatives.  If he gets trapped into championing open carry in a tinder box, it would be terribly damaging -- since normal Republican delegates know better than anybody else just how unstable the far right is.  It's a family secret they like to keep to themselves.
