Israel Proves the Desalination Era is Here

Israel now gets 55 percent of its domestic water from desalination, and that has helped to turn one of the world’s driest countries into the unlikeliest of water giants.

Anyone else read this article about desalination? Maybe it's just because it's Saturday night and it's party time, but I can't help but feel this is the most hopeful and truly game-changing news I've read in a long time. After climate change, water shortages globally seem to me to be the single biggest challenge we face.

Does anyone know when the first desal plants are coming online in southern california? You northern californians must want your water back, and this could help.

Completely agree. I have been thinking for a while that at 50c /cubic meter, water shortage for humans is hyped up. The caveat is that while true for human consumption, large parts of the natural world will dry up, with strong impacts an animals, ecosystem services, fires etc. the other caveat is that if powered by fossil fuels, desalination will have adverse impact on global warming.

Pretty good deal as well if the price is (I saw this in the Emil threads) $0.55 per 220 gallons. $60 per week for family of 4 approx less than ebmud charges

Oh, Larry, you don't remember the young Dr. Thompson! In the early 70s, I was reorienting into the Berkeley grad school of journalism after batching in biological sciences. The cultures were quite different...but difference exploded into disorienting mental chaos when, in a class on the literature of journalism, I opened Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by an eminent "doctor of journalism" then all the rage. I must have scribbled on every page: "Is this allowed?" Were my new colleagues pulling my leg, I wondered.
