A fine example of what can be done with CGI now if one wants to get artsy.

(Go full screen.)

Very cool. Beautiful, in fact. Reminds me a bit of some of the night scenes in Avatar.

Definitely a full-screener.

Wow.  Great CG world.

This makes me think of the current Mad Max movie, which uses almost exclusively practical effects, and as a contrast the the ape scenes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which use CG.

Film reviewers and movie fans often talk about how practical effects are ruining cinema. They say practical fx are way better than this new, soulless CG crap. (https://uk.yahoo.com/movies/13-practical-movie-effects-that-were-loads-better-95384192726.html)  But the ape scenes in Dawn could only have been done with CG. And it's amazing how much emotion and soul they were able to put into these characters.

I don't think practical fx are inherently superior to CG. It comes down to execution. In the Star Wars prequels, they were soulless because the execution was poor and if you are comparing that to the practical fx in the original trilogy, then of course it won't compare. Frank Oz is/was the greatest puppeteer of his time. The fx in the Transformers movies is soulless because Michael Bay has no soul. Life of Pi is another movie that made good use of CG.

This being the Ipse Dixit list, I will cite my sources:
