Jindal's gone. What's next? I'm betting Carson is going to crater, given his performance recently. For a quick review watch http://www.cc.com/video-clips/fnad8b/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-ben-carson-s-public-breakup

Jack, how should Carson "fight back?"

Yep, Carson is in freefall. The latest Fox New Hampshire poll has him as a single digit: http://www.businessinsider.com/ben-carson-down-in-the-latest-fox-news-poll-2015-11.

Do watch the video. I thought it very funny. Hell, Chris Matthews was rolling.

I don't think there is an effective "fight back" strategy. Attacking the media or your opponents doesn't work when the issue is your apparently complete ignorance of history and the nature (or existence?) of the world outside North America. When foreign policy issues begin to impinge on the domestic discourse, candidates are required to have some sort of answer to the questions raised and navigating the intersection of ignorance and policy requirements will most likely lead to the crash and burn of his candidacy. Trump can last longer because he has been addressing those issues all along and even if his answers seem ridiculous he has been demonstrating a basic awareness that the issues exist.

On paper, Carson should be perfect. He's ignorant, crazy, hateful,
misinformed, etc., etc.

The problem is, Carson can never get the nomination because the white
bigots who compose the base of the party will never vote for anyone
other than a white Christian straight (or at least deeply closeted)
man. I'd be shocked if they voted even for a Catholic who otherwise
fit the description.

Cheers,
David.

The race part is absolutely untrue. This is a cartoon caricature that only exists in the imagination of the Left. My mom was as much the base of the Republican party as anybody, and she loved the guy.

Now it is true that religious nuts have grabbed the reins of the party. But Carson is reliably religiously nutty. That’s what people loved about him. So, sadly, the part about having to put on Christian airs is true.

Not so much. Surveys of the Republican base keep showing distinct
racial animus, mirroring the propaganda constantly spewing out of
outlets like Fox.

Maybe she did, but a couple of things:

- We don't know what she'd actually have done if it came to brass
tacks in a primary, and
- Her opinion doesn't control.

I don't feel sad about it because I've never even briefly been tempted
to be a Republican. The Republican base was very clearly bigoted
assholes when Goldwater swept the Confederacy in 1964. I was born in
1968, and they've never wavered from that in my lifetime, even though
their public rhetoric has changed occasionally.

Glass houses.

This is such an unserious bit of cherry picking. You can find racists in any party. Which party locked up Japanese Americans? Which one segregated schools? Which party repeatedly put a KKK leader in the senate?

Throwing the racist card is code, all right. Code for “I have no argument”.

Stepping away from this now. I can’t deal with the whole “Fox News is the boogeyman” mentality.

Carson "fight back"?  He's toast.  I can't figure out how a smart man who has been a quixotic candidate before this, came into 2015 without sufficient knowledge to even best Trump.  Hard to figure.  Insufficient work ethic?  He does not seem like that kind of guy....but he obviously is.  Only explanation that makes sense to me is he was told voters don't care about foreign policy, and so took that facile counsel as fact.....one with no conceivable events that could possibly alter that old chestnut for at least a few days....long enough to get unmasked.  Reckless.
