New Name on the Transom

My newly acquired Nonsuch 33 has a ladder in the middle of the transom, as do other Nonsuches. The previous owner had an illegible name and hailing port to the port side of the ladder. Other folks have a larger graphic across the full transom, interrupted by the ladder.  There is no right answer, but I would be very happy if you could share photos of  your transoms to me as examples of great lettering! Feel free to share your recommendations. Cost for the full graphic in Stuart, FL is a whopping $595!!

I don't know what the U.S. requirements are but here is a link to the requirements for markings for Canadian registered vessels. For pleasure craft they specify the type and size of letters but not the location on the hull.

For pleasure craft and air cushion vehicle (hovercraft):

• on the exterior hull: display the vessel name and port of registry together

For commercial vessels:

• on each bow: display vessel name
• on the stern: display the vessel name and port of registry

Net registered tonnage and official number

Block-type Arabic numerals that are at least 4 cm high

On a clearly visible interior structural part of the hull, mark:

• “N.R.T.” before the net registered tonnage
• “O.N.” before the official number

If you used the Assigned Formal Tonnage method, only the O.N. needs to be marked since the net tonnage will not appear on your Certificate of Registry.

If the vessel is licensed as opposed to registered the following applies:

• https://ccga-pacific.org/files/library/07-07_vessel_license_Nov_29,2007.pdfThe markings must be on both sides of the bow (or as close as possible) at least 75mm (3 inch) in contrasting colors. (Vessel license numbers found near the mid ships or stern may be accepted so long as the numbers are 75 mm, in contrasting colors and found on both sides of the craft. My Nonsuch has a two word name, so easier to split name. 

1) Totally agree that spending $595 for lettering is very unnecessary. 

2)As mentioned, BoatUS Graphics or Google other graphics companies. They are all terrific. 

You build size, font style and color. Order online. All these variables dictate price but under $100. 

3) Excellent point about government lettering restrictions. I’m not aware of any State of Maine requirements. My vessel is documented and there is a definite requirement that the hailing port on the hull must perfectly match that listed on the Documentation. 

4) I kept boat name “Carpe Diem”, hence only needed to remove hailing port. 

5) Removal of old lettering:

- we used a hair dryer to carefully remove old decals. 

- I’m told “East-Off” oven cleaner works well to remove lettering paint. Never had to try it. I bet someone else has a good idea. 

5) Application of new decals is a two person job.

Hi Steve Romeyn and welcome to the cult,

Attached are two pics of name markings on our 26C, Misty Cat, at the stern, and on the bow. As we are registered with Transport Canada (as opposed to licensed  - our 2 options in Canada) I have the unique (nationally registered) name plus our port of registry on the transom. On the bows in our case(or anywhere alongside is permissable) the unique name only. None of those funky number stickers like you get in most states.  Stern and alongside markings are required at a minimum size, I think Mark Power laid out the display regulations in his post. Mine are larger than needed, as I aimed for best readability. I just ignored the ladder and tried to keep the graphic bold. I really like what Bandolero has under her ladder (I needed to keep my port of registry at a size that didn't permit that, but I tried). I felt a bit of a quiver when I saw Caper. There are dozens of friendly fishing boats with that name in my home waters of Cape Breton. While I am more traditional with marking my Nonsuch, I enjoy seeing weird and wonderful graphics on boats. They are very telling!

Further to my previous send, the price you got seems a bit high but may include installation which is a cost factor. Depending on how d.i.y. you are, you can get the vinyl cut to apply yourself for probably 15% of that price for one colour vinyl applique, to do your transom at least and maybe your bows. You should have a specific size for each applique, and a sketch (which you can do in Word and select a font you like). Visit an econo sign shop and make sure you tell them you want salt-water proof vinyl.

Fun to see so many nice transoms.

Here's mine.  (Pseudo-apologies for the reflections; it's sooo shiny because I'd just done four coats of Poli-Glo.)

I'm a member of the group which went the $80 vinyl apply-it-yourself route, but I have a lot of respect for the boat painters who hand paint custom lettering and graphics.  They can give you a beautiful, artistic look that few of us can match by ordering off-the-shelf graphics or even trying to design a vinyl applique for ourselves.  $595 sounds like the high end for such a custom, handcrafted job, but not totally out of line, especially if the design involves special paints like gilt coloring.

EZ-Off absolutely did not work for me, but the lettering was very old.  The youngest used a heat gun and a plastic putty knife to remove the lettering, and we'll need to polish it up to get the last of the residue.  Possibly there will be some shadow of the old lettering as the paint has faded a touch.

The name graphic on Nature's transom is quite large, covering about 2/3 of  the transom width. This size probably was chosen so it wouldn't be obscured by the stern ladder and the swim platform.

Personally I like the name offset to the side. I plan on balancing with a club burgee sticker on starboard side.
