Is anyone making the Nonsuch model from Model Shipways? Want to discuss the progess? The good (the model), the bad (my mistakes) and the ugly (learning how to...)? Hints? Do's and don'ts?
So far so good, now finishing the half hulls, almost ready to put them together.

Making ‘mini me’ Nonsuch
Morning Alan or Tracy , or both !
I’ve just begun and not as far  onwards as you are. I’ve noticed the directions require some interpretation but otherwise, I think it’s going fine. I have ‘big Nonsuch’ projects in play so I only fiddle with this one when wanting a break.  Regards, Gary Forster, Aloki  / NS 30329 , Oyster Bay NY

Yes, the instructions are not detailed but good enough for a novice modeller like me. Looks like you are ready for the transom, the deck and then the planks. I found that the planking is not exact, don't knock yourself out trying to make it smooth because LePage's wood filler works well, and rather a low spot to fill than a high one to sand.
Currently on step 7 of 69, winter project may take a tad longer than expected.

Installing seat back.jpgHi Alan
I'm a few steps ahead of you. Spent time waiting for hull planking to dry doing other tasks. Mast came together although their instructions were challenging. I changed to just standing with a high school circle template to gauge my progress. Currently installing the cockpit seat back.

I have changed a couple of details. Mounted the toe rails after the planking as they do extend out from the hull an inch. I purchase a model/jeweller's drill kit to drill the blocks. It is on the bow deck with a block. Although I purchased a full kit on Amazon Canada I have found that the drills shown are best. I wish I had purchased a kit with at least two set of this type of drill bit. I have hand drilled the blocks. Also used the drill and copper wire to add a cross member to the Samson post and increase the grove to better reflect our boat.

Samson post.jpg

One other note, in my kit the basswood sheets were identified by alphabet but the booklet is by number. Added the appropriate number to each sheet.

Enjoying the challenge while we wait for spring.

One additional trick. Once the hull was glued together I put together the model stand as a temporary way to hold the model for next steps. I did not want to glue them (hull and stand) together and found that the model slipped off the stand posts tilling it and straining the hull at the post. To mitigate this situation I added two pins to the stand posts and drilled the bulkhead below the hull to accept the pins. The photo shows the posts with pins. I used some of the brass rod provided.

Hi Ted:
Would you recommend that drill and bits? I have been looking for a battery micro-Dremel for general use anyway. Speaking of, do you have links or descriptions for them on 'zon?
Thanks for the toe rail mod, will do after sanding the hull for the umpteenth time.
Not there yet but I may hold off putting in the keel until necessary. Maybe make a cradle. Hmm, wonder if a cradle would be better than posts?

My experience so far is that "micro drill bits", those with a larger shaft and plastic ring perform well with drilling the blocks. I am hand drilling over using a Dremel tool for better control of the process. The alternative "mini drill bits" are not strong enough to cut into the block material. The challenge remains longevity and breakage of the smaller bits. I'm now ordering a set of micro drills bits only (10 each) of the mid range sizes that are used in this kit. Hopefully these 50 bits will see me through this project. It's all guess work given this is my first wood model kit. Still enjoying the challenge.

Finished Nonsuch model.jpg
My Nonsuch 30 model is now finished. It was a challenging experience and I want to share some tips and hints to help others enjoy the challenge. I have developed and posted to the INA Members' Tips and Projects page an article. It provides some additional context to the model kit guide. Additional tools and supplies are discussed. Tips on the planking the hull, enhancing the display stand, and building the mast and wishbone are shared. Details on finishing the supplied blocks and rigging the model provide more context to the kit instructions. These suggests are shared to help those thinking about or taking on this modelling  adventure.

They just dropped the price of the kit with extra tools and paint down to $99 US (just after I ordered it for $119).

Ted,

You’ve done a superb job and produced an absolutely beautiful model. Thank you so much for sharing your advice on building. I’m sure it will be invaluable when I start my model later this year.

Ted,

Nice work on your NS30 model.   I’ve just finished sanding the hull and the next step is to put some primer on it to look for high and low areas.

It’s looking very well done. Wood filler, sanding, paint, more sanding and wood filler will keep you busy for a while.

Looking good, Jim. I am a touch further ahead and will hold off  spraying the hull until the cabin and cockpit are ready. That will take time, filling, sanding, repeat ad mauseum.

Ted / Jim, your models look excellent! Jobs well done. A question to all, I received the model too from my son for last Christmas. Building it is beyond my skill set and my level of patience (still working, but in a condo without a good workshop). Can anyone recommend a model builder willing to take on the project for me. Willing to pay for the service.

Hi Rick
The only advice I can offer is to check with local hobby shops that may be able to make suggestions. Part of my experience was to take on this adventure to test my skills. I can truly appreciate your dilemma as the tasks were not simply place and glue. The result however was worth the effort.
