Reefing Question (formerly Tack Line Question) but poorly explained.

On our Nunsuch boats we have reef lines that are located at the base of the mast and reef lines that are out on the end of the boom.  Is it necessary to use a winch to pull in the reef lines that are located at the mast?

As a follow up.  Does anyone use a cunningham on a Nonsuch?  If so do you have a separate Cringle for it?

No. The tack reef lines go through the cringles by the luff.  The clue reef lines go to the cringles on the sail by the leach.  It’s in the layout in the owners manual.

No winch needed for the reefing lines. 

FATE’s sail has a cringle for a Cunningham but I have yet to rig one.

I do not use a winch to set my luff nor my clew reef, unless I’m too late to set the reef and the wind is fighting me. At that time I will use a winch to tension the clew reef. 

I have an Evolution sail and it does have a dedicated cringle about 15” up from the tack and I run a Cunningham through that. It was an easy addition only needing to attach a swiveling block on one of the available points on the mast collar. I set it into the available port winch but tighten it by hand and use the winch only as a handy cleat.

I, too, use a winch to tighten up the clue reef lines.

I raise the topping lift quite a bit first. For that I do use a winch. That way the clue reef is just pulling down loose sail. It’s not pulling the wishbone up at the same time.

I have attached blocks to the tac and run the lines down the side. Allows me to get the reefed tac at the same point as the full hoist.  And reduced any friction. A stainless ring and a sewn webbing or soft shackle is all you need to rig it...

I can post pictures if need me

As for the need for a winch, on my 26 I get it in without need of a winch, but I use the winch on the leach.
