Hi Charles,
I recently had a Doyle stackpack installed on my 30 and am quite happy with it.  Paul Beaudin at Doyle sails in City Island NY was very helpful and has alot of experience with Nonsuch

Hi Charles,

I had a Doyle Stackpack on my old NS 30 installed in 2008 and was very happy with it except for two things:
  1. I had picked white  material for the Pack, but after 10 years it completely deteriorated and fell apart. When questioned, I was told by my local Doyle sailmaker that I should have picked navy blue material, which lasts far longer in the California sun...

  2. When the boat sat for a while (like months) and I didn't sail, the StackPack would fill up with water which eventually stained the Doyle racer/cruiser sail. Not sure how to fix that other than make sure the sail is raised to let the collected water flow out. I DID have the Pack modified to install mesh sections at the bottom but in reality they didn't help the water that collected between the flaked folds.

For what it's worth

So you struck the sail when the rain started and did not raise it in the fair?
That sounds like a lesson straight from the heaven of sailors.

Brian, such fine seafaring poetry can only come from a Nonsucher!

Evolution sails makes a sack system that you might want to consider.  It hangs from modified lazy jacks, has a zippered top, mesh bottom and other ways for water to exit and, I presume, in a way that will not let cavity nesting birds like starlings get inside.  I was familiar with other stack pack systems but didn't like all the extra material flapping around. A friend who owns a 33 has one, and I instantly knew that was what I wanted when time and budget would allow.  Take a look.

My boat came with a Mack pack.  It was a wanna be. I did not like it.
Spend the money for a Doyle.

Michael,
Wait until I get my Nonsuch before you give me that kind of praise. Then the poetry will come.

Getting one installed on my 30U this week by the inventor. Will ask about the water creepage issue. Will share impressions and pics if anyone is interested. I imagine the experience with the 30 is similar to the 33.

I have a new Doyle for our 33, sitting in a locker waiting for work on our boat to be complete so we can launch!  Unlike the Doyle it is replacing, this no one has top battens the full length (in two sections with a joiner).  I think that will help eliminate the saggy look of the old one.

We have the Doyle setup with full top battens, had it for I believe 4 years now, it works great and water does get into it during the winter here on occasion.

Generally though we are very happy with the system for the ease and time savings it provides.  The local Doyle dealer here in Seattle provided great service.

Yes can't wait to do that but probably not this weekend unless the yard shocks me with getting all their work done early.
