Title: Archaeology of the continental shelf: A global perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing submerged prehistory
Abstract: Recent years have seen great advances made in the study of submerged prehistoric landscapes and continental shelf archaeology around the world. Such research is providing new insights into the Final Pleistocene (20,000 to 10,000 years ago) landscapes that existed around the world and were submerged by global sea level rise following the end of the last glaciation. This talk will provide the results of research across the globe that is being undertaken as part of the UKRI funded Life on the Edge (LOTE) project. This innovative interdisciplinary research is developing and implementing new techniques to explore these now submerged landscapes and locate archaeological sites that can tell us about the impacts of sea level rise on human occupation in the past. As global offshore development accelerates to meet the challenges of achieving Global Net Zero, the study of these submerged landscapes is facing new challenges and opportunities. This talk will argue that through collaboration there is a unique opportunity to work together to gain data and information that will provide novel insights into major archaeological research questions, while also assisting governments and developers in identifying and managing those areas of the seabed that have the most value for archaeological preservation.
Biography: Simon Fitch is currently both Assistant Professor and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the Submerged Landscape Research Centre at the University of Bradford. He is currently leading the UKRI funded 'Life on the Edge' project investigating submerged Late Palaeolithic (20,000 to 10,000 years ago) landscapes. He has over 20 years’ experience in the study of all aspects of submerged landscapes, including projects such as NOAA funded ‘Between the salt water and the sea strand’, and the ERC funded 'Europe's Lost Frontiers' project. His current research is focused on the global impacts of environmental and landscape change upon human populations during prehistory.
