Hi all

Do please help me out by informing where I can dispose of used/spoilt  tube lights.............

We have a pile of them unfortunately. And really have to find a way of safely disposing of them.

Thanks

Arati

Lo ,

It  riled  me  to no end, in the old days when  Electricity dept. employees  flung tube lights  by the
roadside when replacing Street lights.

It is  so encouraging to hear from environmentally conscious people.  Please share positive responses with us.

Dear Amelia & Arati,

Thanks a lot for raising this issue, even though not directly related to gardening. But It is a great need of hour to address these issues, or else our gardens & fields are getting contaminated with plastic, residue from burnt plastic, hazardous waste like batteries, tubelights, etc. The recent Sonsodo fire and ensuing environmental damage & health of locals........

Anyway, checked about tubelight, earlier Goa State Pollution Control Board used to collect (only through Panchayats and MMC, etc), but now they don’t. As there is no system in place to dismantle in a safe manner (basically mercury gas should be removed first, hence it should not be broken). Hence recommend that you keep it safe in your house itself (till the time mechanism is worked out), sure there will be enough space for it as no more people use it as much.

However, you can hand over other electronic and even hazardous waste (batteries) to these people (some of them may accept thermocol too, or else for sure at Animal Shelter, near CCP Panjim):

South Goa:         Clinton Vaz (www.vrecycle.in) at Nessai Workshop (can Google the location) 9890936828

Vasco:                   Baylon Gomes   9822486662

North Goa:         Ashley 9823118321

Margao:               Soham  7066605552

Besides, you can buy so many reusable / biodegradable stuff from a shop Dhairyansh Green (Vaishali) in Panjim (like bamboo tooth brush & comb, sanitary pads, etc) as well as from Green Goa Works in Mapusa (selling panchgavya, bio enzymes, bio floor cleaners and a lot more)...

Kindly ensure to compost all bio degradable waste in your own campus, even if you live in a flat or society, there are so many solutions / options available – only a will is needed.

Hope above helps to some extent!

Prashant

PS: Those specifically interested to know more and get a Google map (Goa specific) with details of what other kind of waste (including excess food, cloth, etc) can be handed over in closest to your area, please send a message to 9822475519 to group called Team Up to Clean Up Goa
