Hi Geo-AI Working Group,

We are thrilled have another exciting installment of our lecture series this week so  please join us on 6/25 at 10 am CT for a presentation from Dr. Jeff Cardille Associate Professor at McGill University.

Title: They Come in Peace?  How helpful, skilled, and/or threatening can Large Language Models be in remote sensing?

Jeff's work focuses on the intersection of landscape ecology, computer science, and remote sensing/GIS. His research centers on understanding the drivers of landscape pattern change and their far-reaching effects on ecosystems, biodiversity, and human societies. Dr. Cardille employs a sophisticated blend of cloud-based platforms, geographic information systems, and satellite imagery to investigate environmental impacts across local, regional, and continental scales. His work often involves integrating various data sources to refine land-cover classifications, smooth out temporal inconsistencies, and accumulate evidence of land cover change and stability.

Jeff is the lead editor of the comprehensive 55-chapter manual, "Cloud-based Remote Sensing With Google Earth Engine," published by Springer in early 2023. Beyond his academic role, he holds a unique position as a Visiting Faculty Researcher at Google Research, where he is helping Google to work through the potential for LLMs to impact remote sensing. Learn more about his lab here.
