If this opinion stands (and given the current 4-4 split on the Supreme Court, any emergency action could well fail, leaving the lower court opinion in place), the court may well order new districts be drawn in time for the 2018 elections.”

And if these new districts are used in the 2018 election, that in itself could swing the House Democratic.

Wow. Good news for democracy, although the idea of trying to redistrict before November seems daunting.

Yes, it will be daunting, and they may need to postpone their actual election until the end of the year.  There’s a good article in the NY Times about it: Federal Court Throws Out North Carolina’s Congressional Districts, Again. The arrogance of the Republicans was astonishing, according to that article:

“I propose that we draw the maps to give a partisan advantage to 10 Republicans and three Democrats, because I do not believe it’s possible to draw a map with 11 Republicans and two Democrats,” David R. Lewis, a North Carolina state representative who helped lead the remapping, said in 2016.

That is pretty blatant and disgusting! Of course, living in Maryland it’s tough to throw stones.

Unfortunately I can’t read the NYT article without subscribing.

Also, maybe we should move the partisan aspects of this discussion elsewhere, since GMOM is non-partisan.

Timing is everything in this instance and until such time as the Supreme Court requires redistricting via nonpartisan panels everywhere, nothing could be more partisan than redistricting.  What the Supreme Court does re this North Carolina case seems to depend entirely on when it gets and decides whether to accept it for consideration.  If there's still a 4-4 ideological tie on the court, the lower court ruling may stand.  However, if the latest right-wing ideologue gets added to the court before it has to make a decision, I expect North Carolina voters to be stuck with what currently exists (for the 2018 election anyway) and the future would look bleak for certain partisans.
