Correct zero year for saptarshi calendar is -3076.

Reasoning from another book

The era, used in the works of Kashmir writers from the earliest time, is known as Saptari.+++(5)+++ It began 25 years after the commecement of Kali era, as we learn from Abhinava's own statement in the concluding verse of the Br̥hatī Vimarsins :

> "Iti navatitamesmin vatsarentye yugāmse
> Tithi+++(=15)+++-śasi+++(=1)+++-jaladhi+++(4)+++-sthe mārgaśīrāvasāne
> Jagati vihita-bodhām Iśvara-pratyabhijñām
> Vyavrnuta pari-pūrām preritah Sambhupādaih".

It states that he finished the Brhatī Vimarsinī in the 90th year when 4115 years of Kali had elapsed. This year (1934) it is the 5035th year of the Kali and the 5010th year of the Saptarsi era, as any almanac will show. If we deduct 25 out of the figures, which stand for the Kali era at present, they will show the Saptarsi year. This shows that the word "navatitame" in the above quotation stands for 4090th of the Saptarsi era just as 34th, used to-day, would naturally mean 1934th A. D.

Namaste !

It is known from Kalhana’s Rajatarangini that there’s a Loukika era which was counted from 25 years after the beginning of the Kali era. We do not know when and where exactly Saptarshi era got equated/ identified with the loukika era.  Kalhana , in the Rajatarangini I chapter, maintains all the three eras to be different– Kali,  Loukika, and the Saptarshi’s stay in Magha nakshatra during King Yudhishtira’s reign.

Thank you.

What does "Saptarshi’s stay in Magha nakshatra during King Yudhishtira’s reign." mean? You don't mean the saptarShi-maNDala I gather?

I just read the below in the calrndar committee report (which seems to replicate the error in the zero error). The vr̥ddha garga ref might interest sudarshan:

Here we are examining critically the claims of a few eras, which we supposed to date much earlier, e.g.) the Kaliyuga era which is commonly believed to have been introduced in 3102 B.C. the Saptarṣi era, and the Paṇḍava-Kala mentioned by Kalhaṇa, the historian of Kashmir, who wrote in 1150 A.D., and supposed to be dating from 2449 B.C., and others. The Saptarṣi era commonly known as Lokakāla or Laukika Kala is measured by centuries and has 27 sach centuries in the total period of the cycle. Each century is named after a nakṣatra, viz.. Aśvinī, Bharaṇī, etc; and the number of years within the century is generally mentioned, so that the number of year of the era never exceeds 100. This era was in use in Kashmir and neighbouring places. In fact this era bas no relation with the seven r̥ṣi-s (the Great Bear) in the sky or with any actual nakṣatra division.

There is difference of opinion as to the beginning of the era. According to Vr̥ddha Garga and the Purāṇas the starting year of the tenth century named after Magha are 3177 B.C.+++(←Seems off)+++, 477 B.C. and 2224 A.D. of the different cycles, when according to Varahamihira the third century named Kịttikā begins. The beginning years of Varahamihira's Magha century of the different cycles are however 2477 B. C., 224 A. D. and 2924 A.D.

But , interestingly, we find a reference to the Sakayear 1082, (1161CE) when Saptarshi mandala was in the 61st year in Visakha nakshatra, in a Sanskrit work of astral science -Ballalasena’s Adbhutasagara. The year 60/61 is agreeing with  Kalhana’s reckoning of 1070 Sakayear as 49 loukika year.
