Namaste respected members and friends,

I am happy to share with the members of this group the publication and formal release of the Sanskrit translation of Nalacaritam, one of the important poetic works of the great Kannada saint-poet Kanakadasa.

The work appears in Volume II of The Complete Works of Kanakadasa Translated into Sanskrit, brought out by the Saint Poet Kanakadasa and Tatvapadakarara Study Centre, Kalagrama, Bengaluru. The volume was released by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka.

The present volume contains:

  • Haribhaktisāram

  • Rāmadhānyacaritam

  • Nalacaritam

Among these, the Sanskrit translation of the longer Nalacaritam has been undertaken by Dr. Shankar Rajaraman, CAHC, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University). The first two are translated by Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh.

Dr. Shankar Rajaraman’s translator’s note itself is of considerable interest to scholars of Sanskrit and Kannada poetics. In it, he discusses in detail the challenges involved in rendering the Kannada original into Sanskrit while preserving important features of old Kannada poetic practice such as Bhāminī Ṣaṭpadī structure, dvitīyākṣaraprāsa, stylistic continuity, and the aesthetic movement of the original composition.

For the information of members, other Sanskrit translations of Kanakadasa’s Kannada works include:

  • Mohana Taraṅgiṇī translated by Dr. S. Jagannatha, Mysuru

  • Devaranāmas translated by Dr. J. Srinivasa Murthy

These efforts are valuable contributions towards bringing Kannada bhakti and literary traditions into wider Sanskrit intellectual circulation and enabling deeper inter-language literary dialogue within the Bhāratīya knowledge tradition.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Shankar Rajaraman on the publication of his Sanskrit translation of Nalacaritam, a work that reflects considerable literary and metrical sensitivity. Congratulations are also due to Śatāvadhānī Dr. R. Ganesh for his contributions to the volume through the translations of Haribhaktisāra and Rāmadhānya Carite.

I have attached the front cover of the volume and a photograph from the official release ceremony for the kind information of members.

With regards,
