I've got a box here that is regularly visited by both Stellar Jays and crows. Last year, I had everyone at stage 3, able to put the coins provided in the slots to open the lid. Over the winter, the crows stopped coming, and the jays multiplied. The jays kind of overtook the box a bit, never giving the crows a chance due to them using up all the coins. Unfortunately, there was only one "smart" jay, and he never gets past stage 3, and the rest of the jays wait for him to open the basket. I guess that's smart (well, except for the one jay that got his head stuck in there....)
We spent a while trying to find high value treats for crows and low value treats for the jays to try. Finally, we reverted back to open feeding and got some crows visiting, and I've been putting treats around the fence by the crowbox as well. Slowly moved up back to stage 3. The jays are still being jerks just for the sake of being jerks, and I don't have this new family of crows successfully putting the provided coins in the basket yet.
But today, they did leave a nickel for me on the fence where I usually throw a couple of treats for them.
Small win, but still is pretty cool.
