All,

I have painstakingly converted all of my hand written entries for 5 months into an excel database that has a pivot table summary tab, full database tab, bulk entry tab, and special tab for all dropdown info. I have, in total, around 3500 separate entries

I'm attaching some screenshots of the database since I cannot attach it in a group.
The variables I am currently tracking are:
Date
Phase #
Feeder Type(I have a video feeder that has a view of the crowbox, I track bird landings on this as well, but do not count them as successful attempts)
Food type
Common/Scientific species
max individuals at one time
attempt success yes/no
observation time
weather
various notes
bird name, if known (I have a small number of crows and magpies that come often enough that I have names for them, so this could easily be removed)

I'm curious as to what other information others think I should be adding to make this as comprehensive as possible, as I find quantitative data for a project like this to be extremely important, especially when this project is still in it's beginning stages with not a lot of data collected as of yet.

I'm wondering if I should be tracking specific temperatures, breaking down the notes column to specify things like movement between feeders, arguments between birds, extended time spent on box, etc. also wondering if I should have a number assigned to each specific entry.

Josh, I'm not sure how often you check the group, but I would love your opinion on this, and what info YOU think is important to include for the success of the project.

I am open to suggestions from everyone to make this as solid as possible.

Thanks everyone,

Julia

Hi Julie
Congrats on gathering such a comprehensive dataset!
Lincoln Park Zoo has a software app called Zoo Monitor.
Here is a link that describes a well designed behavioral study.
You might get some good ideas on a way forward.

As I mentioned before, I’ve created a basic ethogram app for monitoring crow behaviors. This is a beta version, and it runs on laptops, desktops, and mobile devices.

To begin, click Start to open an observation session. You can enter the Crow ID, session details, and location data, then click Start Recording. The app includes 14 behaviors—click a behavior button to start timing it, and click the same button again to stop. When you’re finished, click Stop to end the observation session.

At the bottom of the screen, the Analytics button lets you view summary information and download data in various formats. The History button displays individual observation sessions.

I’d welcome any feedback or suggestions for features you’d like added or changed. I hope you find the app useful.

You can access it here:
