Hello, fellow devotees of the round board!

As most of you know, the Cleveland Crokinole Club's inaugural Holiday Classic singles tournament was a rousing success!  Many thanks are due to Jim Gress for organizing the tournament and to Schnitz Ale Brewery for being their usual friendly, efficient hosts!  The 34 players included several from the top 10 in the National Crokinole Association.  They were divided into two preliminary round-robin pools in the morning, and then divided into a 10-player A pool and eight-player B, C and D pools for an afternoon round-robin.  The top 4 players in each pool played semi-final and final matches to determine the final rankings.  In the A pool, Ryan Buhr defeated Darren Van Gammeren to take top honors.  The match of the tournament was the third-place match, which pitted our own Zack Sherman against Jeremy Tracey.  Zach pulled off the upset to take third place!  A video narrated by Garrett Tracey of the semi-final match between Jeremy and Darren has already been posted.

There's a lot of tournament action coming up!
  • The Elmira Winter Crokinole Classic, an NCA Tier 1 event, will be held on Saturday, January 17th.  Detains can be found here.  Registration will close on January 14th or whenever it is full.  As of six days ago, there were still plenty of open spots.  There are competitive, recreational and cues divisions.  It takes about five hours to drive from Cleveland to Elmira.
  • If Elmira is too far for you, you could visit the TGG Con gaming convention in Kittanning, PA (home of Browncastle Games) on January 17th and 18th.  Admission is only $6/day.  Details can be found here.  Of course, Browncastle will be there, as will many other games. Browncastle will be running tournaments.
  • The Windsor Crokinole Tournament, an NCA Tier 2 singles event, will be held on February 28th.  Details can be found here.  Although this is not a Tier 1 event, its location ensures that plenty of top players will attend.  .It's a 3-hour drive from Cleveland, and play is scheduled to start at 10 AM.  If you're Jim Gress, you could probably drive there, play and drive back in one day.  If you're me, you may want to book a hotel for the previous night.
  • Browncastle Games will be holding its annual charity tournament on March 14th to benefit the Royal Kids Camp.  It's a unique format:  players are divided into groups of eight players each.  Each group plays a St. Jacobs-style doubles match, seven 4-game rounds, changing partners each round so that every player plays against every other player and plays with every other player as their partner during the course of the match.  After the matches are complete, the two highest-scoring players from each group become permanent partners for a double-elimination match.  The tournament is promoted through Steven Brown's church, and it attracts people of all skill levels.  Kittanning is close enough that it can easily be done in one day from Cleveland.
Happy flicking!

Hi Rob. I saw your post on YouTube somewhere about the scoreboard.

Attached is the scoreboard HTML file from Tracey Boards. It is kludgy and takes some practice going through it, screwing it up, starting over, etc until you get the hang of it.

It helps to have two monitors. I put the video on Monitor 1 and then click the HTML file to open it in a browser tab on Monitor 2. Set the parameters for the scoreboard which is pretty straightforward. Then do a screen recording of Monitor 2, sizing the screen recording window to include the scoreboard only. Click on the video to start viewing the match. Click back on Monitor to to set the cursor's focus there. As the match proceeds, use the keyboard to keep score:

1 = shot with no 20 made
2 = 20 made
9 = 20 made for the opponent

when the game has finished:
4 = 2 points for the first team listed on the scoreboard
5 = tie so 1 point for each team
6 = 2 points for bottom team on scoreboard

You must pay close attention because there is no way to redo or correct the score once entered. You have to start from scratch (and you will!) if you screw up too badly.

Once the match is over, stop the screen recording. Pay attention to the location where your screen recordings are saved so you can find them easily.
Go into the video editing software and then import the scoreboard into the project. Drag the scoreboard onto the video, sync the timing of the scoreboard, adjust its size with picture-in-picture settings. Then go to the end of the match and cut out any "excess" scoreboard that extends beyond the conclusion of the match. Then you are done!

Let me know if you need any help. So far, I have not found an easier way.

Jamie

Jamie,

Thanks very much!  This is great!  I hadn't thought to try using HTML and (I presume) Javascript.

Can you recommend a tool for capturing the scoreboard so it can be imported to a video editor?

Do you think there's a demand for a version of this file that provides clickable buttons rather than requiring keyboard input?  I'm a software developer, and I'm sure I could add buttons to this.

Does anyone care about the statistics portion?  I noticed a couple of bugs in it.  It tries to divide by zero, resulting in "NaN" (not a number) being displayed, and if you mark that a shot is a certain type, say an open 20, then all shots after that are marked the same way.  The marking is not cleared when a shot result is entered.

I don't know of anyone who uses the stats.

I have a Mac and just use its screen recorder keyboard shortcut which is the same as using Quicktime app.

For a PC, here is a link: How to Screen Recording PC

As for features, the ability/keystroke to undo the previous action would be extremely helpful. Sometimes I click a wrong button and there is no mechanism to correct that short of starting over from scratch or trying to remember the error and compensate on the next shot hoping it has a different result than the original shot. Another problem with the app is that when I have to start over, none of the information (player names, tournament name, etc, all the variables previously added) is retained. It just reverts to the original defaults and it is truly starting over from scratch.

Another improvement, similar to above, concerns using the scoreboard for multiple matches in the same tournament. I have to start over by opening the app in a new browser tab and type in the same tournament name, semifinal/finals, number of disks, etc. All the same variables over and over. Gets really tedious. If there was a way to "Reset Gameplay" so that the scoreboard retained all but the player names and scores which could be updated and reset that would be a big convenience.

I know slightly more than nothing regarding programming. One thing I figured out is that when entering the button color you can type any HTML color name such as "SandyBrown" and that will work for button color.
