VA3LK CFO #941 SK -- incorrect rooster entry

Good evening, gents!

As I was reading through some of the old CFO newsletters on the Internet Archive, I noticed that my wife's grandfather, VA3LK Larry Kayser, had been a member -- #941. I checked the rooster, and his entry is listed as Larry Smith of Huntsville, ON. I assume this must have been a mistake based on a QRZ lookup. The current holder of the VA3LK call is indeed Larry Smith, who it appears is not an SK. 2-letter calls are scarce in Ontario, so they get snapped up as soon as they become available. Quite a coincidence that another Larry got this call.

With all this discussion of the rooster lately, I thought I'd ask if we could correct the #941 entry to show Larry Kayser's name. This would make my wife most happy! I can try to find the rest of his info (address, etc). I know he went SK in 2004.

While we're on the topic, I'd be happy to hear any stories, anecdotes, or memories that other members wish to share about Larry. He sounds like he was very interesting, quite a character, and may have ruffled a feather or two. I won't relay any off-color material to my XYL hi hi

Of course, his last name is not used. I did a brief search and turned up a couple of links that may help make the case. First, an archived email group message written by him with his full name and callsign in which he indicates being a CFO member, and second his SK notice on eham.net:


He appears to have been a proud and active CW op, and was very involved in LF, AMSAT, and I believe EME. It seems he made the first transatlantic contact on 136 khz. I know that he did a lot of interesting work for Bell in Ontario.

VA3LK is CFO 941 Larry Smith of Huntsville, ON Canada - CFO numbers are never reissued.

There was a period where people who QSO Jim Ricks, W9TO were CFO members before they started issuing numbers, I was such a person. I am sure there were others.  I used to QSO Jim W9TO almost nightly on 3513 (or so, I forget the actual frequency), W4AX, W4ZMQ, myself, W4SON/M and others were on there earlier, then maybe around 9 PM Jim came on and increased the code speed above 40 WPM.

Jack W4SON made it into the Rooster with number, 59, but I only joined years later after I heard they were assigning numbers. I am 864.

So it appears your Larry was like me until I finally got a number and like W4ZMQ who never got a number!

That explains the email post of his, I also would tell people I was a CFO member - which I was - but I was so early I was before membership numbers were issued. I feel sure that's the case with your Larry W2LK.

So even though I was one of the very early members W4ZMQ was definitely a member and he's not listed on the Rooster.

I have old emails before we made the Rooster and your Larry VA3LK kay...@sympatico.ca is listed, no CFO number is ever given for any of us.  

Maybe some of the old timers can  help.

My guess is that he was a "pre-number" CFO member like I was before I finally stopped insisting I was a "pre number CFO" and humbled myself to get a number!

Thanks DR -- very interesting to hear about the early days of the club.

I have done a little more digging, and have turned up a few more details which make the case.

The 1993 CFO newsletter lists #941 as Larry, VE3PAZ. See page 8:


The 1993 Callbook on the internet archive lists VE3PAZ as belonging to Lawrence Kayser (see page 1678, should come up automatically):


Larry Kayser is listed as the owner of VE3PAZ in the callbooks on the internet archive from 1988 to 1995. I'm not certain how far back he owned that call, but crucially, he was the owner of the call when the CFO newsletter made mention of #941 VE3PAZ Larry. The 1996 callbook lists him as VA3LK, which he held until his death on Oct 5, 2004.

As I said, I assume a simple mistake was made while updating the rooster. Someone must have seen VA3LK Larry, looked up the call on QRZ or another database to update the #941 rooster entry, saw a Larry (Larry Smith in this case, the subsequent owner of VA3LK), and simply used that info.

My best guess is that someone, probably Carmen K1LKP, was going through the old roster and updating it with info from QRZ.  Speaking of which, has anyone heard from him lately?  I used to hear him on 40m all the time but it’s been a good while since our last QSO.

For the guys asking about Rooster corrections, I do not have the ability to edit the document shown on line.  I just copied and pasted it so I could get a list of callsigns.  The copy I have is not official, but I will use my callsign list to send in for the CW Club RBN.  Nobody has asked for callsign corrections for a few days, so I guess it’s OK to send it in now.

Carmen and I exchanged emails maybe 2 months ago.  He has taken down his station and I gather he plans no more ham activity.  No explanation, just a gracious hello and hope you are well.  He's a good soul.  Been up to his QTH a few times over the years and I still use  J36 that he gave me.  Same bug my om used in WW2,

I strongly believe, that Larry Kayser, VA3LK was a CFO member. He was also FOC, A1, and FIST member too. I didn’t find anything about Larry Smith. Larry Kayser were in a few articles with some CFO members.
