It was Wild Bill Usery and I can't remember Glenn's last name.  I think there's a pic with Glenn in it on the Radio Officer's group.  I think they were both Hams (I know Bill was), but I don't remember their call signs.  Bill was a Radio Officer during WWII, perhaps a bit before.  He had one leg.  He lost the other one as a child playing in the train yard.  All his friends went underneath the 2 train cars and he went between them.  The train moved and he lost the lower part of his leg between the cars.  Eventually, they kept whittling it higher.  He went to sea in WWII as an RO.  He told me that a RO on a brand new oil tanker wanted to trade jobs with him, he being RO on an old rust bucket freighter.  He thought, if I was a German submarine captain, I would send my torpedo after that nice new tanker instead of this rust bucket, I think I'll stay here.  The tanker later got hit. As a medical professional now (not 40 years ago when we worked together) and him now being well past dead, I can say that he was also a functional paranoid schizophrenic. Good op, though.  Glenn was a good op too.  Not fast, but he got the job done.  Neither of them were "high speed" CFO type ops, just good CW men. 

Fred Joy (W0RSW), who I think was CFO, and a Radio Officer, plus an Airline Radio Operator/navigator and a D-Day veteran as radio operator on one of the landing craft, who could easily do over 50 and did back in the days of CW tape readers on telex machines, told me that a coast station (WNU) operator was a dialectician. You had to copy CW from all different kinds of fists, almost all really bad.  Dots and dashes the same length, no spaces and the plain text was in solid Greek.  That was the job.  It wasn't high speed, it was just trying to get the message through.  A point to point op, in contrast, was a high speed op, but the code had to be good.

I CHECKED OUR CFO ROOOOOSTER AND

IN 2004 HE CHANGED HIS CALL SIGN TO

W5FNO.

 

THE ONLY STATUS I HAVE ON FRED JOY

IS THAT HIS LICENSE EXPIRED BACK IN 

2014.

This was the last Cluck-In that I can remember.  It was held in Oakbrook Terrace, IL. I had met some of these wonderful guys at the cluck-In held in Indianapolis previously.  73
