I’m happy to announce our next regular HPAC meeting is today 3/23 at 5 PM EDT. Note that this is 30 minutes later than our usual starting time.
Climate scientist  Zeke Hausfather will be in conversation with us.

Zeke was described by the New York Times as “ a seemingly timeless chronicler, charter, and commentator on all things Climate.”

He is Climate Research Lead at Stripe and Breakthrough Senior Fellow.

Stripe is a global technology company recently valued at $50 billion that builds economic infrastructure for the Internet.

As their climate research lead, he helps “to scale permanent carbon removal to meet the challenges of dealing with hard-to-decarbonize sectors of the economy and drawing down atmospheric CO2 later in the century.”

He is a climate scientist and energy systems analyst whose research focuses on observational temperature records, climate models, and mitigation technologies. He spent 10 years working as a data scientist and entrepreneur in the cleantech sector, where he was the lead data scientist at Essess, the chief scientist at C3.ai, and the cofounder and chief scientist of Efficiency 2.0. He also worked as a research scientist with Berkeley Earth, was the senior climate analyst at Project Drawdown, and the US analyst for Carbon Brief.

He has masters degrees in environmental science from Yale University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a PhD in climate science from the University of California, Berkeley.”

The recording of the discussion with Zeke Hausfather and the Healthy Planet Action Coalition on 23 March is at https://youtu.be/wfZYVRKGwxM

Zeke is Climate Research Lead at Stripe and Breakthrough Senior Fellow.

The meeting began with comments from Zeke, followed by Q&A and discussion. The main theme is whether net zero emissions could be enough to stabilise the climate.

An mCDR-based 'moral duty model' comprising the STEM, policy, and socioeconomics of climate disruption mitigation:

1) Sea level rise is how the climate disruption wheels will eventually come off for ~1B coastal people and beyond, and the odds of realizing rapid sea rise rather soon are rather high regardless of what we can do now or in the future. The forcibly displaced population has now exceeded 100M. Important members of this community have in the the past disagreed with the above statement in part or in whole, yet the displaced person population due to sea rise is an issue that is as good of a starting point for a 'moral duty model' as most.

2) Setting up a STEM, policy, and socioeconomic moral duty model along the lines of completely supporting the survival of ~1B initially displaced humans for unknown generations would represent a C footprint that meets the needed >GtC/y CDR definition, direct cooling intentions, and emissions reduction/avoidance at a needed and meaningful scale. The marine environment is likely the best focus for scale with the marine deserts being central to policy issues.

Coupling CDR, direct cooling, and emissions reduction is needed for such a large survival colony, and thus limiting the modeling to an oceanic colony that provides the above and properly maintaining such a large model would seem to be an ongoing moral duty.

3) An internationally respected C Credit market, a respected C-based fiat currency, and a leading STEM, policy, and socioeconomic advisory board is needed that offers a respected, constantly updated, State-of-the-art, MRV value structure for the C market.

4) Scale and Speed of Scale up is an understood obligation within the mCDR field of study, yet the obligation of scale must also include supporting the many sub gigaton per year CDR works.

In brief:
Going big with big confidence likely is easiest out on, in, and above the Ocean.

This is a CDR specific discussion group, not the general GE discussion group.

Does Dr Keith's work cover any aspect of CDR STEM, policy, or socioeconomics?

I think that founding one of the DAC companies should count…

Douglas, will he address any CDR specific issue of importance in the NOAC meeting? A new CDR paper? As you and Robert know, this is a CDR specific discussion group not a general GE group.
