Back in 1987 or 88, a friend of mine bought a Shogun MTB from Cycle Logic in North Toronto. It was a strange bike with a 24” front wheel and a 26” rear wheel.
He spent a bunch of money upgrading it to Deore XT, and then one day, while the bike was leaning on a wall out front of the Pet Valu where he worked (he never locked it!), some kids ran up and stole it.
2 years later, I was out for a ride with friend and saw the bike. We were about 10km away from where it was stolen, and the kid riding had gone to a school to play ball in the yard. It was such a rare and unusual bike, and I instantly recognized it. I called the cops, we hid in the bushes for several minutes until the cops showed up, and my friend got his bike back! I don’t think the chain had been oiled since it was stolen…but a happy ending for all years later. Well…the thief was pretty unhappy. He tried to pretend that it wasn’t his bike, but me and my friend were all witness, and they took him in.
I hope you have similar luck, with a little less time between now and recovery.
