Hi all,

Our new Bookmobile has a wheelchair lift (yay!) but since it is a kids Bookmobile we are afraid of kids trying to climb on it, etc. when not in use.

Has anyone found a creative way to cover the lift in their vehicle?

Thanks for any advice,

Camee

Kids are definitely curious about and ask about the lift, but they have never climbed on it in the 13 years we have had our bookmobile. Definitely curious if others have had a problem with kids trying to climb on theirs.

Be well,

Oooh, love that idea, Steve! What shelves do you use in the back and do you just use an S hook to hang them?

We actually use ours as a display on our Sprinter which has worked well for us.

I found a wire shelf that exactly fits into ours (and held in place with bungees hooked to eye magnets). When it has books on it, you can barely tell there's a lift there.

We have purchased a wide variety of fun shower curtains that we change with the season and simply hang them with suction cups.

Those are cute ideas to use that space! I've never had a child of any age climb on ours. I actually like answering their questions about what it is. It's good exposure to adaptations for people of different abilities. Plus, I'm too lazy to do anything else with it. :)

I really like the idea of letting the lift look like what it is.  As Sara says below, it’s a good opportunity to talk about adaptive technologies and how we want to include people who have disabilities AND it’s more welcoming for people who may need to use the lift.  Instead of seeing a display hiding the lift which will need to be taken down if they want to come on the bookmobile (and the awkwardness of asking and then waiting while the display comes down), they see a lift that’s ready to go!

Carrie makes a good point about the visibility. Unfortunately, our van is not ADA compliant, so we don't actually use our lift for wheelchairs, just for book carts at once-a-week lobby visits. I had too many people say, "Ooo, and there's even a wheelchair lift!" and then I had to explain.  Putting a display in ours serves double duty.

I've been looking for something exactly like this for ages! Thanks! As much as I hate to cover up the chair lift, it has a lot of pokey metal parts and we've had a couple of incidents of overzealous children nearly falling headfirst into it.
