Unless I'm googling wrong, I'm not finding any post history for this seller on this group or some of the similar ones I follow. Misspelling some of the top brands like Herse and Pacenti is a red flag for a top quality bike like this. I don't think Rene Herse even made a 172.5 crank (appears to be 165/171/177). No selling price or location given either, in case someone local could see it. I think I'll pass...

Peter told me about the forum yesterday... never was aware of it....
Yes I made some spelling errors...  Location is Ann Arbor
In 30 years I have only ridden on 172.5 cranks but it appears
that 171 is correct.
I have an Excel sheet listing all parts and prices- total cost
was 11 and change.
No idea of its worth due to limited supply and a long waiting list

If interested contact me at steve...@outlook.com and I
will send you everything you might want to know.

I'd rather you just post a price and some pictures.
No need for any real comments past that.

told me yesterday that he is slowing down- significantly.

Sure this is my first post and I realize what that might imply...
Placenti was a typo-

Hey Steve

Sounds like a beautiful bike and JP Weigle's creations are always of great interest to all in this list, from prospective buyers to the rest of us tire-kickers! Seriously, word gets around pretty quickly when interesting bikes are posted and tend to get propogated across a number of forums.

Please post pics to the forum! I'd love to see that bike as would many others on the forum. Generally speaking an asking price is list etiquette, but you could certainly ask for "offers over" etc. Just to give people an expectation range that can start the ball rolling.

Regards
Ian A Alberta Canada (who would love a Weigle, but isn't a buyer today at the moment).

It's the top tube that is the important measurement here. Unless you insist on standing over with both feet flat on the ground.
Speaking of which, the steep seat tube angle here will make it "play" closer to a 57.3 top tube with a more or less standard 73 degree ST. The few Weigles I've seen with numbers listed have shared this 73.5 angle. I actually like shallower ST on rando bikes to get the setback I like with leather saddles like Berthoud and Brooks, and still work with regular saddle slid a little forward. In fact it looks like the saddle on this one is slid back all the way on the rails.

Well, it's been a quiet (read: very busy) week at Lake Woebegone, but I got to meet Steve and test-ride this hear rolling work of art.

First of all, y'all may or may not know that I've already got a very fine example of such a machine in an Ebisu 650b randonneur (-euse?..), so I have a basis for comparison.

This Weigle has beautiful paint that has wonderful characteristics when the sun hits it, but also in the shade. The assembly is immaculate, with ample frame and fender clearances for 38mm tires (mounted), and would also be good with 42s. The component spec is absolutely top-notch, with a Weigle rack, Rene Herse cranks, tires, etc., fancy Nitto fixin's, Record-level drivetrain spec, and perfectly set up lighting. There are also lots of extra goodies included in the sale at the price (a whole front wheel, fancy chain tool, extra chain, etc. – all these things that are hard to find, and are the absolute top quality).

I took a quick ride on the bike that included smooth and very rough pavement sections, level ground, downhill, and uphill sections. The bike behaved as a top 650b rando bike ought to – springy and lively, eager climber, confident descender. The drive-train is perfectly sorted, all the feels and sounds are of a tightly assembled bike, and the frame and components are a joy to the eye when glancing down.

Needless to say, this machine is not your budget 650b conversion, not your production bike, not your bargain internet find, not a steal... It is a very solid deal on a machine that would otherwise cost you more in money and time, if you were to commission something like this from virtually any builder, let alone a builder at the top of his craft, like Weigle. The fit seemed to be of a normal 58 x 58 type of frame, with enough adjustability for a person in the 5'10" to 6'1" height range, depending on the day, time in the season, and intrinsic flexibility, moving the stem, post, and saddle up-down-front-back. For my preferences, I'd run a slightly shorter stem a little bit higher up, and the aesthetics would still be lovely, and the bike would still be perfectly balanced.

I should note here that, despite living in the same town and less than two miles from the owner of this machine, we've never met and never crossed paths. (Such is life these days?..) Steve turned out to be a great guy, interesting conversationalist, and a bike nut to rival any of us, with good taste in bikes, good judgement and mechanical aptitude, very fit (!), and clearly not some random yahoo that isn't part of our tribe just because he hasn't frequented the list.

Anyhow... Given all the positives above, am I buying this bike?

Well, recently, I attended a friend's wedding in CT, and brought my kids. The date of the wedding happened to overlap with the French Fender Day, and I dragged the kids on an hour-long drive to Lyme to visit the workshop – maybe some of you remember a guy with 3 little kids from that pre-pandemic year?.. So, from my family's perspective, their response was – so, you're getting the bike, right?! If nobody else jumps in, there's a non-zero chance that I might. A big round date is coming up on my life calendar... So, for me, it's basically between this bike, and something that's a rather different beast altogether (have my eye on a Rob English "one-sided" bike). Hmmm....

If you're at all in the market and can afford it, this bike is the pinnacle of its kind. One would not regret it.

For the right person, this bike could do about everything you'd want from an all roads bike. IME these are by far the most difficult type of bicycle to get sorted out on account of all the little details that really need to be perfect for it to look right: fenders, lighting, racks, etc, etc. As someone who rides a similarly set up MAP that I love, a bike like this is so fun and versatile and, least we forget, high performance. There is a lot of value imbedded in having Peter get all the details right.

This is a list specifically for bike sales of this variety: https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/bobishbikesfs

InternetBOB has great bike sales, though it's primarily a discussion list and discourages people posting sales only. There are certain rules and courtesies for selling there: https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/internet-bob/c/RiqPKpbRqXc/m/UfOZtITNBAAJ

Randon is another google group aimed towards randonneurs which occasionally sees sales posts: https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/randon

If you have a randonneuring group in your region, there is likely either an email list or facebook group for them. Those groups tend to not love sales from people not in the clubs either, but given the quality of the bike and that it would be great for randonneuring, I don't think too many would mind seeing a posting.

A lot of bike sales happen on Craigslist & Facebook Marketplace. There are many downfalls to those, such as check scams and no shows, so best to read up on those unless you are already familiar. I always require cash in hand, and meet ups in public areas. Many police stations now have a specific place for online sales like this, where you can be slightly more confident that selling something of value won't end badly.

There's always ebay too. Set a high reserve price otherwise you might run the risk of not attracting enough bidders to reach a price you wished for.

From the images you provided, I would highly suggest finding someone to take some glamour shots with a high end camera. Close ups of brand name parts, lugs, the finish, straight on shots of the bike, proof of recent photos, etc. would all make a for sale post shine.

Rando bikes aren't really focused on, but I think you'd still get interest if you market it as an allroad/gravel/bikeback bike

Internet BOB is worth a try and gets a decent amount of traffic (much more than here), but IMHO BBFS and randon are either dead or comatose; I wouldn't bother with them. Sorry, I don't have any useful suggestions since I'm not in North America and so cannot realistically buy or sell bikes on any of these lists.

i sincerely hope you are not selling this out of financial duress.
this is a special bike and unfortunately it's going to take some time and effort to find it a new home, and you sure don't need time pressure agreed to that.
i buy $100 bikes/parts on a whim. multi thousand purchases require quite a bit more consideration. you need to cast a wide enough net to find the person who might be interested in this, a very specific bike, AND have the patience for them to come round to making the move on it.

i don't know if you've listed it on the famous auction sight. there are whole books written about how to sell there. expensive bikes will often sit there for a long time, waiting for the right buyer. honestly, weigels come out of his workshop more frequently than come up second hand. people shopping for one usually aren't checking the interwebs daily for one. you also need the patience for the right person to even see the offer.

i know that other channels exist- dealers, traders, craigslist, etc. people here have given you a lot of excellent suggestions that i hope you've followed up on. i think it's just going to take a lot of time, effort and perseverance.
keep bumping the posting here, and i wish you all the best in selling this amazing machine

I can't comment on the merits of putting it up on the bay, but this is a very expensive and very specialized bike - as such, it has a very specific audience, and selling things like this (whether cars or bikes or whatever) tends to require a combination of patience and knowing how to find the right audience.

You have been given a lot of good advice about different selling strategies and channels for selling the bike. My feeling is that if you have the bike posted in those venues that have been suggested, you are probably reaching a high-percentage of your audience. I think the only possible eyeballs you could gain with eBay might be Japanese and European collector market. There is a real appreciation for this style of bike in Japan and France. How well Weigles are known in Japan I don't know, but he spent time in France. But, you have fees, and international shipping etc.

If patience is not your strong suit, then at some point you have to listen to what the market is telling you regarding the price. If you have plenty of time and don't mind holding onto the bike, then go ahead and stick to your guns. Just know that it could take a matter of months or even years (I've watched more than a few really high-end bikes languish on eBay and remain unsold for multiple years) to sell.

Several years back I purchased a group (I had over 75 at one time) of collectable racing bikes (Paramounts, Colnagos, Masis, and Team Motorola Merckx bikes ridden in the TDF) from the estate of a local deceased collector. None of them were my size and I sold them all over a period of about 2 years. I used all the avenues at my disposal, including eBay. I kept a spreadsheet where I documented (at the time of purchase) what I thought I'd be able to sell each bike for. Sometimes I did really well, and other times the bikes were not worth near my initial estimates. I learned that when someone made an offer, even a low-ball, it was smart to always counter to gauge their interest. If they were a flipper or bottom-feeder they would quickly disappear, but a lot of times, we'd arrive at an acceptable price.  You learn a lot about the market by listing bikes as buy-it-now or best offer. I learned not to get too hung up about my sunk costs and to trust the market. Also, photographs, keywords, and descriptions make a big difference when selling a bike.

It is a really special bike, and I hope you find a new owner who will be over-the-moon for it. Best of luck.
