I think TA just came out with a narrow wide 1x chainring to fit to 50.4 BCD 5 pin cranks.

Grand Bois has a 38t up and that's it. $100 USD!

That could actually be useful if the price was right. Maybe they might be cheaper ex-Europe, unless they're a special for GB.

I couldn't see this on TA's website but there are several new products on their home page, including these:

https://specialites-ta.com/double/337-1641-double-plateaux-specialites-ta-super-compact-direct-mount-sram-specialites-ta-kpl009.html#/122,denture,46-30

Still no smaller GRX 2x rings yet though. :-(

Later,
Stephen (who could buy a few used or NOS TA rings for that price)

This is something I simultaneously need and most definitely do not need in my life.

For being a "keeper of the flame" shop, Grand Bois certainly seems to be embracing 1x drivetrains. Their bike for the last Concourse des Machines was 1x, made by Toei I think. Maybe they convinced TA to make this chainring. Could explain the high price if this was a small feeler order just for Grand Bois.

Here's a rough translation from the GB blog:
"Here is a TA cyclo tourist pattern chainring familiar to veteran cyclists.  However, the shape of the teeth is different. This model has a narrow wide shape and can be used with the latest components. (1x setups).
The shop familiar to France made only 38T rings and  the production run was were specially divided with Grand Bois.  Rings  can be purchased at our online store."

*Blog entries can be accessed from a drop-down menu on the GB main page*

I suppose the shop "familiar to France" is Alex Singer.  GB and Singer have had a  relationship since at least the 1990s.  Scott Davis,  Minneapolis, MN

Anyone hazard a guess what bb spindle length affords an ideal chainline with this chainring, 130mm OLD rear hub, and 10s or 11s cassette?

According to this 1984 Kitching catalog, TA recommended a 111.5mm spindle length for single chainring applications of their cranks.

Take it with a grain of salt as they were using 126mm OLD hubs with 5 or 6 speed freewheels back then. So maybe try around a 115mm spindle to start, and see what your chainline and chainstay clearances are like?

Lena, you could also email Grand Bois and see if they have a recommendation, as they have done it before.

Good idea on asking them. Makes sense Etan. Sheldon's Hetchins 2x9 with a Shimano 115mm bb has a chainline of 43mm. If the big ring of the double has the same offset as a ONE ring, 115mm or slightly longer should be about right...

Cycles Alex Singer was not involved (Olivier does not like 1x drivetrains and in fact used a triple on his Concours de Machines entry last year).  These were commissioned by Cyclodonia.  You can find their long blog post about it here, including a reference to an expired patent for a narrow-wide sprocket from a manufacturer of agricultural implements in 1978. https://cyclodonia.wordpress.com/2020/06/30/pro-5-vis-one-la-reconciliation-du-mono-plateau-et-des-standards-classiques/#more-4845

I put this on my latest build mated to SUNXCD crank arms with 103mm BB. It’s 11 speed with Rival clutch/derailleur. The whole thing shifts predictably, accurate and is quiet. The 38t chain ring and 11/46 cassette gets me up the steepest hills here in Sonoma. I don’t mind coasting downhill but I do spin out on my hardest efforts on the flats. I’d rather be able to ride up hill and sacrifice “hammering” in the flats, as I’m not much of a hammer anyway.

Nice!! What model bb did you use John?

With an Omniracer steel 110mm bb and SunXCD cranks, I saw a tiny gap between the bb shell and crank bolts. Worked smoothly with a 10S cassette on a 130mm wide hub and 11S chain. Crudely measured Q 146mm.

I'm building a Grand Bois porteur right now and would like to put a 1x on my VO Grand Cru crankset..

This is what I use for a N-W chainring on a 50.4 BCD crank - the SunXCD 110 adapter spider with a 110BCD N-W chainring. Means I have a decent range of manufacturers and chainring sizes to choose from:

That 46/30 TA chainring set for SRAM arms is very cool. Good stuff!

Depends on which particular 50.4 BCD crankset you're using. For my 1x setup on a Sugino PX crank, a 108mm Phil Wood JIS BB gave me the correct 45.5mm chainline for Campagnolo Ekar. That's with a 12x142 thru axle rear hub. The Phil Wood cups give a couple of millimetres side-to-side adjustment as the cups don't have shoulders that bear against the BB shell, so you can change how far in each cup screws to vary the chainline.

Igor, I continue to enjoy this setup, now on the Road+. SunXCD cranks, 38T Grand Bois/TA ONE narrow-wide chainring, Omniracer 113.5mm bb, 11-46T 11S cassette.

Sam, GB does have a 40T narrow/wide up to 11 spd compatible ring.  I have one for a vintage project, soon to be completed.

Another option is to use the Sun XCD 110/74 spider for 50.4 cranks, and you then have a wide choice of 110BCD NW chainrings.

Another, very pretty, option for a 54.4 narrow wide chainring comes from Rovar Cycles in the Netherlands. The guy has an ebay store, below. I"m happy with mine.

This and the SunXCD spider look like good options. Thank you. I also made contact with Cyclodonia and they have the 38 and 42 narrow wide rings in stock still.

I bought mine several years ago from Velo Duo Cycles in the UK, though checking their website just now doesn't show them as available...
