I wanted to mount a suntour derailleur on a huret dropout but  I don't have welding equipement to lengten the huret "stop" as JPWeigle once did.

So I embarked on finding a specific washer.

The huret specific adaptor to mount a huret derailleur on a campagnolo dropout, which was the initial part I started with, does not work even with alterations ! ( its for the other way around)

I did  then try in modifying  the rear derailleur sheath stop for a huret challenger derailleur. It worked but not up to my wishes. The washer was not really blocked in position and the small derailleur screw hitting only a minimal chunk of metal

I slept on it and Eureka ! I needed to find a sort of small metal cup with a flat bottom , whose sides I could partially suppress to actually fit the huret "stop" and lengthen it, and at the same time not rotate against the dropout.

Fumbling into my ironmongery "mess", bingo !! a worn out stronglight crankbolt cover ..........

After having drilled the hole for the suntour bolt at  10mm (its actually better if not perfectly centered as the hole in the dropout is not centered too)
and suppressed some chunks for the washer to sit tight against both huret "stop" and lefthandside top corner of the dropout)

Here is the result. The finish of the washer could be better........  but it works quite well and is strong and light ! ;-)

And I think the trick can be repeated and customized according to the "non huret" derailleur to mount.  It made my day !

Brilliant improvisation, or "hack", as one might say! :-)

That piece could also now be used as a template for grinding a similar shape out of solid aluminum, if more metal proves to be needed. Someone with a "desktop" CNC machine could easily manufacture these.

Thanks for sharing your process and result!

Thanks Scott
Actually the Stronglight cover is really a "toughy" - nice solid steel so base is quite thin and sides quite thicker thanks to the needed material for the thread so wont' go to a CNC job. Don't think it needs more metal  ( and no CNC machine close at my disposal I am afraid too).
happy to have decreased the spare parts stock lying around too ( but a very marginal extent !)

Brilliant! Even someone without their own CNC mill could whip up this design in 10 minutes in a free app called eMachineshop, which is linked to an actual production CNC shop in NJ. You can get real-time quotes within the app based on the design, quantity, spec tolerances, material, etc. Someone willing to make 50 of these could end up gettting them made in steel for a few bucks apiece. As usual, the economy of scale applies here, so the more one makes, the cheaper they become.

Hi Anton
Haven't heard of such service in France but it may exist.
Its really an issue here in France , small shops doing that have mostly disappeared ( especially in the vicinity of big cities) and this type of job is not sought after by bigger shops.
So I had to be a bit "sly" .
Can give the specs in mm to a "US soul" for reproduction  ;-)

Bruno, shoot me the specs offline (or here) and I can play around with qty and prices (it usually requires about 50 pieces to start becoming economical)... once I have some sample numbers perhaps another interested soul could initiate a "group buy" if the per unit cost were cheap enough and there is enough interest. I don't see there being much interest on this list specifically, or iBoB, but possibly on Classic Rendezvous...

Bruno, all,
This is very clever and should prove useful to anyone struggling with the proprietary  Huret dropout tab and some other manufacturer's derailleur.

I just brazed one of my pieces in a Huret dropout last week for a conversion frame and will continue to do so when needed,,, but your solution should make life easy for any handy person/mechanic that doesn't own a torch.

Bravo,

Here's one of the brazed hanger mods I did last week on a Raleigh Competition 650b conversion in the works.

Bruno, please add a link and comment under my photo of your washer alternative if you want? Seems like other's would like to have this option.
Thanks.

Brilliant!  Thanks for sharing.  I once had to buy and modify a bushing for a Simplex derailleur hanger that someone decided to drill out for a bolt-on generic Shimano derailleur (why didn't they just tap it for a 10mm threaded mount?) so I could properly replace it with a Simplex SLJ.

I love French bikes and their eccentricities - they force us to be creative! ;)

That looks like a Stronglight drop out.
