5704 Georgia Ave. -Vibration Issue

Hi Omer,

Thank you for taking my call this morning.  As discussed, residents along the 1200 block of Madison St and 5700 block of 13^th St, are experiencing ground vibration that is coming from your construction site.  We understand you need to perform certain task in order to get your foundation set and conform with DCRA codes and inspections. 

We like for you to take into consideration the damage ground vibration may have on the properties nearby.  I have copied the property owners, so they may contact you directly in the event they discover structural damage caused by your construction.  We also like to ask again if you may remind your site crew to sweep up the alley each day to reduce the amount of debris caused by the dump trucks as they enter and leave the alley. 

Also, we would like to schedule an in-person meeting with you preferably in the evening onsite or early morning to review your construction schedule and the amount of traffic the construction site will have in the next few months.  As you have noticed this particular alley is high in traffic and for many a commuter route for both vehicle and pedestrians.  Please advise your availability so that we may arrange a meeting date.

Thank you for your email - and for speaking to Omer about these important issues. The ground vibrations have really increased this week, it might be because of the large hole they're digging in the church parking lot - do we know why they're doing that?

Hi Alfredo,

At the church parking lot, they are removing the dirt in order to level the area.  Once dirt is removed, they are to compact (using roller or hand compactor) in order to backfill with gravel and pour concrete.  For each step they required to obtain progress Inspections for DCRA.  I believe they are using third party inspectors as we have not noticed any city vehicles onsite.

I am working on hosting a community walkthrough with DCRA and DDOT for this week.  Will advise once I have a confirmation on meeting.

You are spot on. I too felt the vibrations while sitting at my dining room table this morning. I decided to walk outside to observe the construction. The massive roller that they were using to flatten the dirt in the church parking lot is in fact the source of the vibration. I proceeded to capture video— as I was recording, the ground was vibrating. I was completely shocked that equipment os causing so much movement in our homes that we can all feel it. THAT IS A PROBLEM!! 

I am not certain of our rights as homeowners—however, I am afraid of the after effects on our homes through the construction and after. Does anybody have any insight on our rights?

Hi Neighbors,

I stopped by yesterday to speak with the Civil Engineer onsite Alen, work that is being preformed is in the Church parking lot of which they were compacting the dirt then the gravel. I was told this task would have been completed yesterday as they were using the parking lot as their staging area for the crane of which it is being mobilized this morning.  They do have permission to block the alley from 9am to 12pm just at the corner.  I did advise them of posting signs on the east side to avoid residents of existing the alley in that direction.  Seems like they have 2 flaggers directing traffic from the video shared.

Just for documentation sake, we are feeling vibrations in our house on the West side if 13th St (5714) that started at 8:30 this morning.

This the first time we've felt the vibrations here on this side of the street, so they must be stronger than previously.

My wife and in-laws all felt it starting at roughly 8:30 this morning. It's not strong, but definitely noticeable throught the whole house if you stand still. I first noticed it in our bathroom which faces the alley between us and Colorado.

Just spoke with the onsite engineer and he states they are compacting the ground now and will soon turn the vibrator on. He will also, come by your side of 13th St once he starts that task. 

I have a feeling you will feel the vibration stronger once he turns it one. I have requested for DCRA Engineer to meet onsite while this task is taking place as the vibration is now over 100’ from jobsite. Will keep you posted once I can set this up. Jobsite will be doing alot of compaction as they prepare for their foundation.
