I have an Ender 3 V2 that I want to convert to a 2d pen plotter. To draw with it could be fun but maybe I could draw PCB circuits with a circuit pen. Then maybe a etcher or lazer.

Anyway I was using mriscoc/Ender3V2S1 firmware on it. I removed the extruder and the connection to the bed. Oh yeah it has a bltouch. I was able to get it to Auto Home but when I tried to create a bed mesh it Errored that it could not tell what the temperatures were. With the help of AI i tried to modify the source code and rebuild but the errors got worse and worse.

Any ideas on how to make this work. I'd rather not leave the old parts plugged in.

Thanks

You could plug in the bed, get a mesh, then unplug it.

I would suggest using screws_tilt_calculate to level with or without heating the bed.

I would think there is no real need for a mesh, just those 4 corners above the adjustment screws would be sufficient for pen plotting.

Or spring-mount the pen and don't worry about flatness.

I would have left the thermistors for the nozzle and bed connected to the board. They don’t have to be connected to an actual nozzle or the bed, but as long as the board is receiving temperature signals you should be able to set it up to not throw errors.

Hey IBM Ken - I haven't seen you here in a While! Or do you also post under a different Moniker?

I had a similar idea to yours. As Seth could start off with more like a Felt Tip pen - so that he could experiment - and have a little bit a "1st layer" leaway!

Also, I agree with you Dan - just do Manual leveling with the Screws under the build plate. In fact, connect a ball point pen to the "print head" - and then do the leveling - and you can also level by Eye-ball, as in - the line being drawn on paper is good!   Makes me almost want to try something like this!!!

I should probably look at the Link that Tim posted - as it's probably the Easiest solution!!!

Or you can buy a cheap PrismCut P20 like I did, then you can setup multiple pen colors and plot some really nice drawings!

This PrismCut can also cut, etch, and do all kinds of amazing stuff!

Truly a well built machine and the software is free!
