Hey there folks,

So, I have an interesting one for you all. I have a Very Special request - for a 3D Printed playing card shuffler. I say special - since it's my son that made the request.

And, in this case - his request for something 3D Printed makes sense - since it MUST be Customized! You see - these are NOT Standard sized playing cards. As you can see in this pic - they are actually Square (with a missing corner - to make it more complicated - also, I kept his glasses in the pic for scale - I could have cropped them out):
image.png
Also, as you will see from this pic - they are Thicker than standard playing cards - they appear to be about 2mm thick:

Now, I did a bit of a search on Thingiverse for existing card shufflers. This one claims to use Less Plastic:

Although, what I don't like - this is NO Pic of a printed version - and I agree with Andy, that when they don't show a printed version - its skeptical as to whether the Thing is even Viable.

Now - here's another one - that claims to be a Remix since "Bicycle" cards are not standard sized:

And, I like this one - since it DOES Show pics of the actual printed unit:

Lastly, I found this one - which is interesting since it adds a Motor. But, that kind of adds a level of complexity to building it - and not sure I want to take that on. But, I will post it here:

So, that's about all I could find on Thingiverse! I figured there might be more - but, it seems not...

My question - has anyone here printed a Card Shuffler before? And, if so - can you give me some input - as to whether it was one of the ones above, and if there are Caveats.

Of course, whichever one I pick - I will have to modify the STL files in order to make it fit the Odd shaped and Thicker playing cards for my son's game!

I look forward to the feedback.

TIA,
-Kurt

Wow those are some chunky cards! Are they just usual playing cards? Ie are there 52 of them?!
I imagine this is going to have to be a design from scratch for your case need, but perhaps pinching some ideas of what has already been done.
Potentially TPU might be your friend here to get some grip here to be able to generate enough friction to drag the cards. Not sure how heavy they are?If you wanted to use the traditional style card shuffler mechanics anyway. I'm thinking, because you have chunkiness on your side you could potentially design something like a crankshaft (like in an engine) with arms that could push the cards in sequence to the centre. Anything new you come up with is gonna take some testing.
Good luck to you pal. I'll keep my eye out for you.

Hey there Soph,

Thanks for your feedback. I definitely want to avoid creating anything from scratch - since I know that would make it a big project. No way am I going down that rabbit hole.  Now, if you look closely at a couple of those "Things" - they do mention usage of O-rings. Which, I believe are rubber rings that you can get at a hardware store. So, not really necessary to print in TPU - but, the TPU thing is not a bad idea, since then you can also design Bumps into it to help with the grip. Still - I think the O-rings MAY possibly work better than TPU -as I think the TPU may come out TOO smooth.

So, nope - they surely are not regular playing cards. There are more and more kinds of board and card games out there that are new concepts - and this is one of them. As such, totally different than regular playing cards. But, you Bring up a Good point! Since, I need to find out from my son HOW many cards would need to be shuffled - and thus - what is the total height of the stack! As I will also have to modify what ever card shuffler I decide to print - to allow it to hold a bigger stack of cards.

Will post back here once I begin to move forwards on this project.

-K

Following some of those links was interesting.  I'll have to look at some of those for some of my board games.

On that note, reading through the comments on this one    Fully Printed Card Shuffler by thomaswoerner1 - Thingiverse

Showed someone who remixed it on Printables with some improvements here: Playing Card Shuffler v2 by Lukas Cenovsky | Download free STL model | Printables.com

This last one has a video of assembly and shuffling, and looks very cool.  I think this design is really neat since all the pieces print flat, and then you fit them together.  I think this would be any easy modification to handle the unique size and thickness of your son's cards since all the pieces are simple prints.  That v3 version already supports three different sizes.  You might even get him to give you the files or make the mods for you.

Really neat.

Hey there Ray,

Thanks so much for that extensive reply - I really appreciated it!

Actually - If I remember correctly - you have your own side Biz selling 3D Printed stuff online - stuff related to card type games & board games. Am I right?

Yipper, you are correct, and I have a fairly extensive board game collection to boot - "market research" as I tell my wife.  :)

Years back a customer came into my shop asking if I could print the game pieces he had designed for a board game he invented. I printed them and the game was absolutely brilliant. They even did a story on him in the local paper. The problem was he was seriously hamstrung with Asburgers and was terrified with the idea of having to actually write out the game rules. You can guess how that ended up.

Cool - am glad I guessed correctly! On that subject - I'm a big fan of Rummikub. You ever play that before?

Also, I forgot to mention. On that Printables page - the guy offers up OpenSCAD files for the card shuffler design. So, I could actually modify those files so it would work with my son's cards. However, in Reality - it may simply be Much easier to just scale the STL parts - as opposed to editing the OpenSCAD files, as I'm not fully well versed in OpenSCAD. Am sure I could figure it out though...
