I came across this video of a Portable FDM printer that prints upside down.  Anyone have experience with it, also I would love to hear your opinion of the general idea of FDM printing "Upside down".

I've seen this before with Delta printers but never with Cartesian printers.
This seems like a portable one too. Decent build volume as well.
Looks like a new motion mechanism too without gt2 belts.

Thanks for sharing !

Recently Nero did a print on the Voron 0.1 (the small Voron) with it upside down. Worked pretty well.

If something is unsupported it falls on the nozzle, probably makes a bigger mess than upright.

Interesting idea!. Pretty hard to do a cold pull on a right angle hot end though. I also use a purge rod when switching to flexible filament, and that doesn't seem like it would play well here.

Wasn’t there a recent video where sone CR30 units were mounted on the wall, and basically printed downwards?

They use FDM printing in space, so I’m guessing as long as your bed adhesion is ok, it doesn’t matter.

Do people still do cold pills? With printers trending toward direct drive, and dual gear extruders becoming the norm, unless I’m using some seriously degraded filament, blockages just aren’t a big issue like they used to be, and are mostly cleared by pushing through some better filament at higher temperature.  :)

If I hadn't just ordered my Voron kit, printed parts and wire harness I'd seriously consider trying to build this!  Fortunately I'm a one project at a time kinda maker 😃

Mark, you are definitely better off with the Voron - aside from the gimmick of printing upside down, this doesn’t seem to have much to recommend it - slow printing speeds, small build area, etc.

The use case for this printer seems to be for a portable unit that you can fold up and take places, so my questions are:

1. Why do you need to carry around a 3D printer, especially on that only prints small things slowly? What need does it serve to be able to produce small plastic items on the go?
2. It is not truely portable unless it is self powered. How big would a battery system be and how long would it last?
3. The printer is only a part of the system to produce plastic objects. You also need a computer to design/slice, filament, and a bunch of hand tools to finish off the item when it is printed. What is the solution for all of that?
4. It is designed to be mobile, but can only actually print when assembled, so you are stuck in one place while it is working. Does this sort of defeat the purpose?

It seems that given how slow this thing prints, that with planning, you could just pack all the pre-printed plastic items you needed and save the volume/weight of carting around the printer, power supply, laptop, filament, and tools. Also it would be much quicker, since when you are on the go, you could just pull out the item you needed and use it immediately, rather than pull out the printer system, and wait a few hours.

In fact, if you needed something bespoke, depending on where you are, it would probably be quicker to just go somewhere where there was a faster, more capable printer, print your item, then go back to wherever you are.

All valid points, but I like the cool factor.

Here's the Hackday post...

We just did a segment on it. This design is full of sooo many innovations beyond printing upside down that we just cannot ignore it.
For now though it's a one off custom machine. Will it become a buildable open source machine? Probably not. Too many machined aluminum parts are needed as well as PC boards and that HBP... For sure though it would make for a very interesting presourced kit! I'd buy!

So here's something to note...
I tried to contact the person who made the vid about the Positron Upside Down 3DP and every path I took to find a way to contact them directly is a dead end. IOWs the individual does not want any contacts directly. Also, his IndieGogo campaign for his slick charger only made 40% of it's $70K goal which is seriously sad since it looks totally awesome,
So... this entire thing can easily be a BS fantasy.

Too bad...I remember whosawhatsis with the Bukito portable printer,  that worked upside down, from at least 5 years ago. But the things I like about this one were the see through glass plate and the non-sling bed approach.

Yeah Bukito used that Synchro- mesh or line chain stuff.
But the Bukito was a Mendel. This is no Mendel... but as far as we all know for now, it's a one off.
