...there are Caveats! Surprising ones!!!

So, I just saw this posting on Reddit - and the print job looks AMAZING! Here are a couple prints of it:
Bambu Warrior Gal_01.jpg
Bambu Warrior Gal_02.jpg

I wanted to share this here BECAUSE the print looks AMAZING - but, Also - to highlight the Pitfalls and somewhat Ludicrousness of this print!

The one being that it took 100 Hours to print (and, from some of the other images the guy posted - I'd say it took up about 70-85% of the print volume in X & Y). But, of course, we know - when you have like 4 colors - it's a LOT of Tool Changes. I think it was about 2000 if I'm not mistaken.

But, the part that borders on the edge of Ludicrous is the Filament  usage stats!!! As the actual model itself was 94grams of plastic. Where as The Waste material - Supports + Prime Tower + Poops/Flushed was about 1.3Kg! Which is INSANE!!!

If you want to see the post - here it is:

It's still an Amazing looking print - even though the waste plastic was Insane!

Wow. It’s amazing what Is possible with 3-D printing. However, the waste takes all the fun out of it

>>>  the waste takes all the fun out of it

That is when you do what I just did: Find an artist who uses the waste to make art. ;)  We just sent a 2 1/2-gallon bag of waste. . Also, it is a thing to sell that material now. Yes, there is a market for that, and it is growing.

Ed - Seriously - I can't believe you're talking about me like that!!! But, it's like you don't Know me!

I'm the guy in this forum - obsessed with Recycling of plastics. I Melt down ABS with Acetone & then I pour it onto canvas - and pour onto other plastics - PCTG, PLA, etc. - which is Not melted like ABS by the Acetone. Have you Not seen any of my creations?

And - a couple times in the past 2 years on here - I have put out the word - to try and get Scrap plastics from folks. But, yes - in my case - the main one I take is ABS - which most people don't use anymore...

So - since I haven't done this in a while - am going to post here a Number of my Abstracts for your Viewing Pleasure...

This is one of my Fav's - which I created about 1.5 years ago:
Red_Blue_Ying_Yang_Abstract.jpg

This one - was my of my experiments in using a wire mesh - applied to a canvas - then painting it with the liquid ABS plastic:
Metal Mesh Abstract.jpg

A fun one I did while at Essentium - with scrap test parts - and then I used GITD ABS and melted it and poured it on:
Glowing Abstract Display.jpg

Now - this was a relatively early creation - it actually is an odd sideshoot of recycling - as I'm recycling Cali plants - dipping them into plastic and putting them on the cavas:
Plasticated Plants.jpg

So - Ed - can you guess what that yellow ball REALLY Is??

And - because of my obsession with Coffee in the morning - and recycling in general - yes, that's an actual ceramic mug, I dropped by accident - it chipped a little and had cracks - but, was otherwise Whole - and I drilled a whole in bottom of it - and I attached it to the canvas with a metal wire. Also, I soaked coffee grounds in Acetone, then I poured the brownish acetone into a jar with white ABS - to make it look like liquid coffee:
Coffee Abstract-Small.jpg

Enjoy!

W'Ren - I agree with you - all that plastic waste DOES take the Fun out of it!

Myself - if I had my own Bambu to play with - I would make wild design - multicolor - but, that would require almost no supports, then, also figure out ways to limit purge tower sizes and the sizes of the "Poop". I mean - it kinda CAN be done - to some extent.

Considering that more folks here on the forum have a Bambu printer - AND - that I posted this Over a year ago - AND that my coworker just got the P2S with AMS - I figured I would refresh this posting. In fact - I now have TWO co-workers with a printer with an AMS - one got it 2 days ago - 1 got it for XMas!

Great Idea Darrell. But, the piece is Not Loved by All - more like a Gamer type person.

However - My Doppelgänger might find his Granddaughters might like it - or Maybe NOT!!!!

Andy - if you printed THIS part on Your XL - I personally think it would make GREAT Fodder for a Segment on the Podcast.

Specifically - if you could show and Prove How SUPERIOR the ToolChanger is at printing this part - compared to a printer with an AMS - not only in regards to LESS Wasted plastic - but, Also - the potential Huge time Savings of printing it on your XL!!!

Anyway - it's just a thought...

You keep wanting people to print this, but where is the STL, OBJ, or 3MF for it?   Any information on where to place supports etc?

I thought you were NOT Interested in printing this model!

Sadly - I wrote up a response - and was digging for the model - then my PC crashed! So - here goes...

Alright, so I went DEEP on this - Down the Rabbit Hole....

I fed the photo into AI, chased it through MakerWorld, Printables, Cults, Yeggi, and every STL cave I could find… and it turns out:

It’s not Jinx. It’s not on MakerWorld. It’s not free.

The model is actually a paid Patreon sculpt called “Blue Girl” from a creator named Eastman. So yes — I would literally have to pay a Patreon membership just to get the file.

And you know what?

I will. If you’ll print it for me on your Prusa XL toolchanger.

Here’s why:

From the original Reddit post, the stats were roughly:

  • ~93 g of actual model

  • ~1,200 g total filament used

  • ~1,100 g of pure waste

That’s over a kilogram of trash for a 93‑gram figure. About 92% waste. The AMS basically printed a purge tower the size of a small planet.

Now imagine the same job on a Prusa XL with toolchanging:

  • No giant purge tower

  • No AMS unload/reload cycles

  • Just small wipes and quick tool swaps

Realistically, you’re looking at something like:

  • ~93 g model

  • Maybe 10–50 g of waste instead of 1,100 g

  • Total filament: ~110–150 g, not 1,200 g

And on time?

  • AMS run: ~100 hours

  • XL toolchanger: realistically around 55–70 hours (less overhead, no purge tower, no AMS swap delays)

So no, the XL doesn’t magically turn it into a 10‑hour print. But it does turn:

  • 100 hours + 1.1 kg of garbage into

  • ~60 hours + a handful of shavings

That’s the point I want to prove. I’m willing to pay for the model just to run this as a real‑world test:

Prusa XL toolchanger vs AMS — same model, same colors, same slicer goal, real stats.

If you’re in, I’ll grab the Patreon file. Let’s do this for science, for efficiency… and for Blue Girl.

Couple of issues;  1) I am currently backed up on my printer - I am printing some carrots for a dolls horse.   THEN I really have to get started on the goody bag gifts for the soon to be 4 year olds birthday party.
2) Count the colors - the XL has only 5 printheads.  Sadly there is no MMU type system for it,, so if you go beyond 5 colors you are stuck.  The only trick is if there are colors used only towards the top vs only towards the bottom you can in theory change the fillament on an extruder the old fashioned way with a pause mid print (I haven't done that yet)  3) Whats worse is that if you want to do full contact support that will eat an additional extruder, so really only 4 colors. I think I count 8 colors in this model - so on a Bamboo that means one would have twin AMS systems.   4) you would still probably want a wipe tower, especially if using full contact support - I am not Andy :-).

So... not at this time.... sorry -- If the model was available I was interested in loading it up into prusaslicer to look at it, but seriously dont put $ into this.

Kurt-A

PS: My N-1 print has been a set of parts to hang an espcam in front of my sons gas meter so he can run AI-on-the-edge to give real time gas usage into his HomeAssistant system.

My current print is that carrot - I am playing with adding wood grain texture through a modifier and fuzzy skin as we speak.

FYI, Eastman is the guy (gal?) who put out the Deadpool bust everyone likes to print.

Their last post was from May of last year and it went silent. A lot of people saying links no longer work, etc. Which is a shame, they made the best statues out there. I'm assuming they ran into legal issues due to IP infringement with selling likenesses of copyrighted characters.
