So I am recommending a similar gathering at the Frick once again for the Red Dress exhibit. This predates our usual February date, but the show closes on January 28. 

I have 2 recommendations, Please state your preference in your reply.

1)  Friday the 26th. Let’s meet for the exhibit 2:30 pm then Then we can catch up with each other for an early supper afterwards at Point Brugge or Pino’s for an early supper, and (red) wine.

2) Saturday the 27th. Meet at 12:30 pm for lunch at Frick Cafe, which is on the same grounds as the Art Museum, and then tour the exhibit afterwards, the museum closes at 5 pm

I am leaning towards the Friday option. But both work days work. Sadly, we know that the time we settle on might not suit all, but we’ll still try!

I am available either day. I am a Frick Museum Member, so if we do Saturday I might be able to reserve space in the cafe.   II will say that Pt. Brugge is very hard to get into, and they do not take reservations.

Friends, sadly, I’m now out.  I ended up winning a free yoga training (108 hours), valued at $1400, and I’m booked Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  

I’ve really dug deeper into meditation and restorative yoga over the past few years, so this is super important for me.  Plus, Derwin and I leave for Spain on the evening of Jan. 31 for three months (we like to say we’re moving to southern Spain for the winter, rather than vacation, lol).  So you can imagine that there’s a few things to attend to in this 10 day period that we are in Pittsburgh after getting back from Turks and Caicos yesterday.  

So that’s the update for me - Derwin and I are now fully retired and Laila has been living in her own place, very happily, since last March.  For Derwin and I, we now expect to be in Pittsburgh only 5 - 6 months of the year, with the other 3 or 4 months at our cottage in Michigan, and another 3 months or so traveling the globe.  Oh, and our house of 33 years on Resaca is empty and for sale (please send buyer our way!), and we moved on Sept. 1 to small condo downtown on the 15th floor in Gateway Towers, right by Point State Park, overlooking the stadiums and our beloved northside.  This is all a part of our ‘third chapter’ plan to live lighter, smaller and travel more.

[DERWIN RUSHING]

This all sounds so lovely, but I’m not able to consider a face to face event for the next 6-9 months. 

In September, Derwin was diagnosed with a fairly rare form of blood cancer/leukemia called MDS for myelodysplastic syndrome. A bone marrow/stem cell transplant is the only treatment option for him. Fortunately, the doctors at AHN believe that he is the perfect transplant candidate!

He’s been taking chemo monthly since October to eliminate the cancer from his body, which happened just after his second round of chemo in November. He has been cancer free since then but needs to take chemo regularly. His next round is scheduled for a week after next.

Then a few weeks ago, we got the good news that a donor match has been made. So now we are on track for Derwin to have the transplant process (pretty simple - like a blood transfusion) sometime in April.  Day one of his transplant is also day one of a 30 day hospital stay at West Penn in Bloomfield. 

We’ve been very fortunate that Derwin has tolerated the chemo extremely well. It’s not affected his appetite one little bit and he essentially has had no side effects, except for feelings of tiredness which come and go.

We have to quarantine like the early days of Covid now and likely for the rest of this alendar year because he’s very immune compromised due to his extremely low white and red blood cell counts. And even after transplant, that will continue for a while. He will be like a newborn baby, with brand new bone marrow, and maybe even a brand new blood type. Derwin says that after transplant he wants his new nickname to be “Youngblood!“

We were happy that we got to spend 19 days near Saint Petersburg, Florida. We just got home on February 8. We got to eat out at restaurants outside, walk the beach, and enjoy warmer weather.

Hello Darlene,

Sorry your husband has to go through such trying times. I just wanted you to know a dear friend had the same treatment prior to and finishing up during Covid. He has been healthy and strong since recovery. He and his wife are bikers and bike the city regularly as well as Europe, etc. It's good to know their is a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep the faith.

Neither date works for me, unfortunately.  Both dates are also Sundays, and contemporary craft is closed on Sundays.  

The PHC has the Life Forms exhibit going thru 4/20.  An alternative might be a visit to that show- they are open 11am-5pm on Sundays.  I would be happy to meet up on April 12 or13 with anyone who is available.

I’m so sorry that you can’t attend. We’ll miss you. Caring for elderly parents is tough. I lost mine both rather young, my mom was only 59 n 2002 and my dad 75, 2005. 

I am being selfish, but perhaps you can get a reprieve and join us for a little while.

Leslie can not make it as she is traveling.

Friends, I’m not going to be able to join in this time.  Derwin is doing great (his oncologist has used the words “amazing” and “robust” to describe his recovery), but there is a hint that some type of virus infection may be lurking.  We need to play it super safe and remain ‘cloistered.’  Just like the early days of the Covid pandemic, before vaccines appeared on the scene.

Friends, I’m not going to be able to join in this time.  Derwin is doing great (his oncologist has used the words “amazing” and “robust” to describe his recovery), but there is a hint that some type of virus infection may be lurking.  We need to play it super safe and remain ‘cloistered.’  Just like the early days of the Covid pandemic, before vaccines appeared on the scene.

Aw, Darlene, it’s good to hear that Derwin is faring much much better. Good news! Don’t worry this won’t be our last. And thank you for the thanks!

Maybe we can gather up at Touchstone for an auction. I’m still pondering on taking Joys class, just to keep the flame burning.

I hadn’t worked on my torch for quite awhile, playing it safe with my eyes. So, I am going to be buying the inland dual grinding and cutter, so I can’t work more freely in the flame, and use cold cutting to get the desired design.

Hi everyone, including those who I texted the “red” alert this morning. I needed to cancel this evening. I was having roofing problems, and while I had it repaired, I still need to install a new one before winter. I had it repaired after those heavy rains, but last night when the wind and rained kicked up again, the flashing around the chimney loosened, and rain got in again. The repair guy is coming between 12:30 and end-of-day, as it is an emergency call and he has to come after his jobs…..Sooooo….

The Fabric International runs until August 30th.

Option 1 

August Tuesday the 26th or Wed 27th, lunch at the Dive Bar and Grill then stroll down and visit Society of Contemporary Craft.

Option 2

I know Joy’s class at Touchstone is August 18th - 22th, perhaps we can meet that week at Braddocks or the Summit Inn for lunch or dinner, stop by Touchstone and visit the gallery and gift shop.  Tuesday August 19th, or Wednesday 20th. Joy, please chime in on this whether you can meet us for dinner.

Or schedule for September, however that month is ultra tight for me.

Tuesday September 23 or Wednesday 24th. We’ll see what kind of exhibit or show is currently running.

Take your pick of any of these dates that work for you and email be back. I hope it works this time!
