Would it be a good idea to start a "Friday Flashback" thread to the

Hi chaps,
I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me out. There's some guys on XSI base who want a Win64 version of my Taut modelling operator, but I don't have access to a Win64 OS. Is there anyone out there who would be kind enough to have a look at doing a 64bit build for me?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

Hi Adam

The webcast might appear online at some point but usually a US focused website and not the AREA.

There is something similar here on my AREA blog that might be useful to you:
http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/graham/ice_flow <https://webmail.vtr.co.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/graham/ice_flow>

It's done in a simple way, but the basics and logic of the Maya <> Soft interop work just the same.
Any questions about this, just drop me a mail.

Thx,

Graham

Hi Graham,

A few people interested I think so have forwarded this to the list.

Not sure what the problem with just making it available is seeing as it was a worldwide webcast.
I'm sure a lot of people would just appreciate having it available to view.
To be honest I don't understand why these things aren't straight up on the site the next day.

Here's hoping.

Thanks,

Adam.

No problemo. :)

I know it can appear confusing about webcasts being broadcast and why there isn't video straight away, but I think it's mainly because there are different Autodesk sites that get hosted by different regions, for different purposes.

Although the webcast was 'global' it was (I believe) actually hosted on a US site with US links and contacts that Mark and Lee have used before, and I did see a lot of US resellers advertising it. Which is probably why it didn't appear on a more public site like the AREA, or that there hasn't been any recorded video yet. At present we don't have the same type of thing on the EMEA side yet, otherwise we probably would of repeated the webcast at a more EMEA friendly time. We did host an EMEA webcast last Oct with live chat, which worked very well, so we're hopefully looking to do more in the year ahead.

However as good as this is, these types of webcasts do require registration, which can be tedious to some. Which is where sites like the AREA and the new Maya, Max and Softimage YouTube channels come in. Previously some webcasts have remained 'On Demand' for registrants, but personally I'd rather just get it out there. And I'm sure Mark will find a way to get this particular video posted.

If anyone has any questions/queries, especially from EMEA, then drop me a mail.

Hi Graham,

while you guys are at it, theres this nifty video of Mark
caching an XSI ICE particle sim (a campfire) and pushing it
over to Maya. Part of an XSI demonstration, a webcast or
a release video. Cant remember, lost track of it.

It would be great to have that one linked as well.

Youre right, its tedious to log in, (ab)use DownloadHelper
or whatever to get to those videos scattered all over the place
or just get to know that a new video exists.

Cheers

tim

Hey folks who might be considering 3delight for Softimage, I just
purchased the 4 core version after doing some kick a** tests with DOF
and displacement. The cost for 4 cores is $400. That doesn't include the
discount for the 2 cores you already got for free! They don't advertise
this, but when you pay $400, you get a total of 6 cores! If you only
want 2 additional cores, just pay $200. I just went ahead and got a
year's support and 2 more cores for less than $400. :-)

In Momentum, is it possible to have the particle size change (age

So far my first test seems to show that the size\Scale is set at first

Any good idea ?

Come on AD, allow a little creative design into the house, open a
competition for whoever would like to design the splash screens, a vote
by the users for their favourite and use that.

I'm sure lots of keen designers would like the Qudos of having their
work flash up every time the software was started in every office around
the world.

It would be like one of those community things.

Could work for Soft, Maya and Max.

Waddya say....?

Adam.

Unless they took it away in recent versions, you can customize the XSI
splash screen via this undocumented environment variable:

set XSI_SPLASH=C:\some_path\my_splash.bmp

You could have a competition at your workplace for splash screen of the week. :p

Seeing the splash screens from 2010-2011-2012 it's clear they put more
effort in adding features than adding eyecandy.
This said I do like the AD splashscreens - it's a "back to basics look" -
simple and to the point.

The v4 to v6 splashscreens were trying to hard to be hip.

The hoody is just so wrong.
Come to think of it - I stopped upgrading my personal license with that

It's even easier, just drop an image with the name "splash.bmp" into
the main Softimage installation folder...
No need to edit anything.

I personally liked the hoody the most - when customers saw it, they
always got curious.
Quite an unusual look that was for a soft like soft...

Since AD took over with the boring stuff, I actually use the splash
replacement option... ;-)
Never thought I would when I first read the announcement.

The red flower was also great.

But yeah, the contest sounds like a nice idea!

The XSI4 box artwork got me in a bit of a mess on a job once.
We had to do smoke for a commercial, and I was trying to explain to the client that wispy cigarette smoke was not something we could do easily, and with his limited budget. He just kept pointing to the box on my desk saying: I should look like this !!! AFAIK that was shot smoke or something, but just try to explain to a director that we have pictures on our software of things the software can't do.
The of course the V5 box had a metaball looking thing on the box ( I know this was hand modeled) But I had to tell another client that we don't have working metaballs in softimage.
The hoodie dude scared the crap out of me cause I thought: Great, now softimage can't do characters either.
So if we do have a competition, Please let the rules be that you can only use softimage to make it :)

It started as some features developed for some customers in a country whose name begins with "Ja" and another large customer whose initials begin with "IL". Of course we realized that we could not use that codename publicly, so it was the only beta program we ever had that used the version number 3.5 instead of the codename.

Does anyone have a collection of the old SI demo reals? I remember I
had one on VHS from about 1991 or 92 and it was great but I can't find
it now. I would still stand up well today. I remember it ended with
Def Leopard's music vid and it had some great ads at the beginning.
Would be nice to see those again.

Hey, wait, was that Titanic that I saw? I was under the impression that that was "all" done in LightWave. Of course, I was a LightWave user at the time and other LightWave users were my main source of information at the time.

The testimonial reel was cool although I wonder how we ever got anything done with such painfully slow computers.

afaik DD used soft 3d for all the digital double shots and some of the ocean shots (arete).
they also heavily used prisms for the effects, and i recall it being the first film
where they used their in house nodal based comping package, that would
later be known as nuke.

ps. in case i got some of my info wrong...i apologize, i was still dabbling with 3dsdos
when that film came out.

To me, one of the biggest features of XSI at the time was the pass
system. I remember switching from Softimage|3D to XSI at version 1.5
and after discovering the pass system, didn't want to go back, even if
there were several features lacking.

And I still think it's one of the best features today. We tend to forget
it because it's been there since day one, but it's still awesome.
