What on earth is a google groups mailing list and why does Feast have one?

As a firm believer in a good mailing list as fertile ground for cross-pollination of ideas and public debate, I've put together my thoughts on what this mailing list is and why it's here...

- It's an internal mailing list for organising Feast things, with about 50 subscribers. It's not intended for marketing. We have a much larger email list for that.

- It's for us volunteers to stay in touch and discuss ideas & issues beyond the Tuesday meetings. It's a continuation of those meetings for ideas that don't fit into 10 minute chat, and for people who can't make it to the meetings.

- An email sent to wn_f...@googlegroups.com will be received by all the subscribers. Anyone can send an email to it, and anyone can subscribe. Emails are only moderated if they are sent by someone who isn't also subscribed. (to reduce spam)

- It is a publicly archived list. This allows us to show our working, how decisions get made, what were the issues, what's the back story, why did we do this instead of that. All of this information can be retrieved with some careful searching with the convenient tools that come free with a google group mailing list. See here: http://groups.google.com/group/wn_feast

- It's a polite way of dealing with many people via email. The subscriber can choose their level of involvement. They can also choose to receive every email as it happens, or as a single daily digest.

- It allows volunteers a useful degree of involvement without giving up the right to step away. Anyone can subscribe to the list, and get up to speed with the current issues. They are free to contribute if they have knowledge or an opinion on anything being discussed. People can tune into issues outside of there usual volunteering role if they want to.

- People can also unsubscribe from the list if they decide they no longer wish to or are able to stay involved. I think this is equally important as we are a group of volunteers. Directly emailing people makes it harder for the people on those private lists to "step away" from the Feast when they need to.

- The list has no decision making power, beyond the expression of opinions. It is a forum for discussion and a public record.

So in the sprit of the thing, feel free to disagree or add your own thoughts on it.

O!

I think this is a very good clarification and really helpful. Thanks Oli.

In particular I think it is useful to clarify that the google group does
not have decision-making powers.

To make it a useful archive we need to make sure that relevant documents
and decisions do get posted to it.

Hello,

At the meeting last night, I didn't tell Helen exactly what needed to be done for the treasure hunt. I thought it would be far easier to jot it all down in an email rather than waffle at the pub.

How the treasure hunt will work:
- treasure hunters will pick up a map from any of the hubs
- at each hub will be a clue that unveils a treasure chest. Inside the chest is a stamp with one of the letters of the FEAST. The aim is to visit each hub, stamp the treasure map with each of the letters (the "F" will already be on the map) and bring the completed map to Feast HQ where the treasure hunter will receive a prize.
- along the way are Jubilee facts that the treasure hunter can find and read. They won't have to find each one; it's just an extra bit of fun to do on the day and will encourage hunters to visit shops and places of interest between the hubs.

Here's what we need for the Treasure Hunt. Feast people who know about money - can we (the Treasure Hunt team: John, me, Gemma) buy these and be reimbursed at a later date? We'll need to buy the stuff this week for fast delivery to get the items sorted before Feast Day.

Four 1-inch letter stamps: “E”, “A”, “S” and “T” (The “F” will be printed on to the map as a clue). Each stamp costs £3.95 (£15.80)

http://www.englishstamp.com/shop_new_in-50.aspx

Four stamp pads at £4.99 each = £19.96

I think we should have a different colour for each hub: Valentine, Royal Blue, Pink, Tangerine

http://www.englishstamp.com/shop_inkpads-2.aspx

We then need a box in which to place the stamp pad and stamp:

I think this medium wooden treasure chest (PTC3) is quite good and we could use the boxes again for something else in the future:

http://www.boxylady.co.uk/wooden-treasure-chests

Four treasure chests at £6 each = £24

OR

Six papier-mâché treasure chests for £22:

http://www.littlecraftybugs.co.uk/moredetails.asp?itemid=12485

To prepare the chests

• we could decorate them, maybe with a simple crown motif on the top.

• we need to secure each stamp pad inside the box. Perhaps double-sided or sticky pads?

• we also need to secure the stamp. This is more tricky since the treasure hunter will need to move the stamp out of the box to stamp the treasure map. Maybe drill a hole through the back of the stamp and through the treasure chest and attach the stamp to the treasure chest with twine? Any other ideas?

Treasure map:

I can finalise the editorial on the map for this Friday. It will then need to be designed, checked, and printed. It will be one side of A4 and black only.

How many should we print?

The Jubilicious facts:

- one at each hub by the treasure stamp chest

- one at each of the following points:

            - Beamish & McGlue

            - St Luke’s

            - West Norwood Cemetery

            - RSPCA (I haven't asked yet, but I think they're perfect for a corgi fact)

            - Floral Hall

            - Pauline the fishmonger

            - Portico Gallery (John - I haven't asked you, but I don't think you'll mind having a fact here?)

            - Post Office

These will have a crown on one side of A4 and a fact on the other side. I can print these out. Gemma has a laminator and will laminate them. We’ll hole-punch one corner of each clue and tie it on to a designated spot for the treasure hunter to find. Clues to the whereabouts of each fact will be on the treasure map.

The prize

We have a few options and I would be interested in your thoughts:

- Union Jack flags

- inflated balloons (from the Beverley?)

- chocolate gold coins (nice treasure!)

Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

Carron

I a m support ing Morley College's proposal to use the Old Library for youth as well as adult services.

I thought the Feast Google Group n may be interested.

Heres the extract from Lmb eths site

In West Norwood there will be an important event at The Old Library 14 – 16 Knights Hill, London, SE27 0HY Friday 25th May 6pm – 8pm

Local residents and groups are invited to take part in deciding which organisations are going to take over local youth sites and run them instead of the council. The meeting on 25th May has been arranged at The Old Library so that organisations can present their plans to the West Norwood community. Everyone at the meeting will judge each organisation’s plans and help decide which will run youth activities at The Old Library

Sounds AWESOME! Let me know if I can do anything, although it sounds like you have it covered! Just a small thing - the post office will be closed on the Sunday, so maybe leave the clue hanging outside...

Thanks for all the hard work, it'll be brilliant.

Helen
