Senior Rails Engineer

We're looking for a talented Senior Ruby in Rails Engineer to join our NZ-based team.

Responsibilities:
• Design and develop components that provide a high degree of utility without sacrificing simplicity
• Develop innovative features and solutions that enhance and extend our core product
• Establish yourself as our technology leader for web application development
• Launch early and often, iterating to take a great product to an even better place!
Qualifications:
• 4+ years experience in software development, with in-depth focus on developing web applications
• Expertise with Ruby programming
• Experience with Python, Java, C/C++
• Experience Scala, Node.js, HBase, MongoDB or Cassandra a plus
• Up-to-date experience with latest web technologies including HTML5 and CSS3
• Experience working in a Linux-based production environment
• Strong design acumen and focus on user experience
• BS or MS in computer science or equivalent experience
• Excellent communication skills for both external and internal interactions
• Proactive self-starter who takes ownership and works well independently and as part of a team
Strong Javascript Skills:
• Someone who doesn't just use libraries, but understands how they work and their limitations; can build utilities when needed.
• Practical experience organizing large js projects, managing dependencies, requiring modules, bundling, etc.
• Experience working with different styles of inheritance, using helpers to define constructors, etc.
• Knows how to use closures to create private scope, and other key aspects of js as a language
CSS:
• Has an informed opinion on how to write good css -- understands oocss principles
• Can explain the relationship (or lack thereof) between html structure and css structure
• Bonus for anyone who can explain the problems with nested css
HTML5:
• Bonus for anyone who is well-versed in html5 and all the cool new things it enables
Server-side:
• Understands an MVC architecture like rails/pyramid
• Understands the performance implications of how data is modeled and accessed
• Can discuss the ways state is maintained/stored between requests
In general, we enjoy working with people who can quickly and fully understand a problem. Proper framing of a problem largely shapes the solution, so getting this part right is crucial.
