Ralph of The Kiteboarding Shop in Tauranga has asked me to spread the word on the 1st NZ Kiteboarding Wave Nationals being held on the 14-17th November at Taranaki.  This is going to be a great event being held in some of the best wave sailing conditions in NZ, which is more about having a go rather then going out there to win.  There is some great prizes including an Eclipse Kima wave kite complete with bar & lines.  I'm sure there will also be demos of the Eclipse range which are getting great wraps overseas.

For the details check out:  http://www.kiteboardingnationals.co.nz/

Cheers

We aren't good wave kiters but Cody & I keen to ride. Be great if we
had a decent number of the Capital City Crew go up since its so
close.

that competition sounds cool. i might try to get up there to check out
the action.

yea i spoke to Ralph the other day, he reckons the eclipse thruster is
a primo kite. also read it "rips you off the water", a "real man's
kite". sounds pretty full on aye. and they are v v cheap. Ralph is
gonna come down to wellington in oct some time to demo the new 09
kites so i will let people know when he contacts me... or you guys can
go direct if you like. pretty sure the 08 kites were $999 or something
crazy... what i reckon kites should be.

So does that mean I can't fly it? ;- ) so do they make a real chicks kite?

G, if you believe all the marketing hype from each kite brand then you
be spendin a lot of money on kite hype for very little difference.
I've yet to find a kite that has the best of everything. That includes
my Airush Vapour IIs. I've flown the Elipse Thruster in AK for a two
hour session when Ralph was there. It was a nice kite, but no better
than many others I have flown. Boosting big and hang time is all
about technique and kite control.

Rather boost off the water than be ripped off. Perhaps I should fly
the girly kites....if there ws such a thing

Kavae, did you have a fly of the Eclipse Nano at all?

I have been thinking about the 6m Nano that Ralph is selling, as my small kite, its a good price he's clearing them for back in NZ.  Considerably cheaper than they are going for here in the UK.

Hey Jeremy
Nah didn't fly the Eclipse Nano. Guys were flying them that day and
they seemed happy enough with them. However thats not first hand
experience.
If the price is right??

This is the same weekend as the round the mountain relay. Which is a
24hr run relay around Mt Taranaki.

Myself and Loui will be up there for the relay, didnt realise the
wave nationals were also going to be there.

Sounds like its going to be a good weekend.

Just in case you guys want to put a team in here is the link to the
mountain relay:

Yep me and Kevan for sure! I spoke to Ralph who is organising it. He encourages us all to sign up soon $50. As this is the first time they need to plan around numbers etc. And the more people the better sponsors!

Anyone keen to bust out a few moves for a wave session in lyall on wed aft?

You may want to organise yourselves some accomodation soon.
Especially since there is a bit going on that weekend.

I think we have booked a house and some rooms at some camping ground.

Yeah Loui and I are part of a larger group who are doing the run (yes
you guessed it there are women involved). Although privately we were
thinking we could slope off an do some kiting not realising the wave
nationals would be on, bonus!

The runing group we are in have organised some accomodation. But I
think you guys may want to organise something soon. There seemed to
be a few houses around that were available. I suppose by then it will
be summer so at the worst you could book into a camping ground.

As far as the surfing comp, I think i'll form part of Mark Gee's
support group on the beach keeping the beers warm ;)

Hey Mark Gee

Got any advice on a wave board size for me. Im approx 108kg, 6ft 3".

I was thinking of getting one of the NAISH boards maybe the 5'4" Fast
Rocker.

http://www.naishkites.com/en/products/custom_wave.html

If I get one now I can practice up before the comp.

Gratefull for any advice.

Yeah for starting off on directionals, the fast rocker is definitely the
right choice for you. Although you should go with the 5'10 version
rather then the 5'4. The extra width & thickness will make life a lot
easier for you especially in lighter conditions.

I used to have an old Naish Custom wave last year & I thnk they are a
nice board. I'm currently riding something very similar to the naish
6'1 carve rocker. The main difference is I've got a squash tail instead
of a pin tail.

Have you tried the Cabrinha wave boards? How do they compare?
Jaz
Whats the price on the Naish Customs?

Thanks Mark,

Yeah I think your probably right on the size. Part of the reason for
getting one is so I can get out on those light days when there is nice
surf.

Loui

Yeah I can do any of the NAISH directional wave boards for $900.00 gst
incl.

Would be keen to try a few boards before buying one

I've tried the 5'3 Cab S-Quad & didn't like it at all. But that was
mainly because the 5'3 was definitely too small for me & I think the
foot straps were set up incorrectly & it was the old design which was
closer to a tow in board rather then a surfboard.

This year they do have larger sizes out & I wouldn't mind trying the
6'1. They are now also shaped more like a traditional surfboard which
would definitely suit me better, although I'd prefer the drive that you
get from a thruster & a thruster definitely suits my style of riding.
The quads would suit the conditions we get around here, especially if
you are going to use it for powered up wave riding, so worth trying one
out if you can.

Its really a personal choice to what feels good to ride. If you haven't
really done much surfing before then something with a flatter rocker
like the Naish fast rocker board or the Cab S-Quad would be good ones to
start with.

interesting to some in the group

Ben also has a great dvd out called 'smack' that covers the lot.
Definitely worth getting if you are going to get into wave riding.

And to add to that there is the opening to smack on Ben's website, plus
a heap of other wave riding vids.

Yeah I had spotted that vid and it looks good. Is there anywhere in NZ
that you can order it from?

No I don't think so. Best place to order it is off Ben's site. I've
been meaning to do so for months but have never gotten around to it...

Hi Louis,
I did one of those 2 for 1 specials in March, and was just there for 3 days. Unfortunately got only one day of light wind, but could see would be a top place if the wind was on.
A lot of good kiters there. But you need to be able to speak a bit of French to communicate!.
October / November are, I'm told, the best times to go for wind.
Outrageously expensive though, and get this , all the wine's shipped in from France!

Yeah October November is excellent here as well so little point
traveling when it is good right on your back door step. I hear its
also good through the depths of our NZ winter which seems to be a time
most of us kiters prefer to travel.
Hiring a yacht and packing with a few people seems like a good way to
go there. Gives you easy access to the good reef breaks.I have spent a
year in Mauritius which is a similar setup with french speakers.
Although I don't speak French I can get by with obtaining the
essentials...food...beer/wine...kiting?

Hi Louis

The guys from Assault in the Mount are going in Early November. I think to
be back in time for the Wave Comp in Taranaki.

They take groups there every year with people of all skill level. The KPWT
use to have a leg of their tour now, but I understand that the PKRA will be
there this year.
As usual he main aim is to have fun and kite. But with this trip you will
also get to see some of the top kiters in the world throwing it down.

If anyone wants to find out more let me know.

Regards

I to kite learned in NC, so it has always been a great spot for me. I
am going back 1st November for a week. Last year we went late October,
and we got the first week of the summer tradewinds. If we had arrived
a week earlier we would have been disappointed. If you go, make sure
the tides are favourable too - some places run out of water which
makes it difficult, if not impossible, to kite.

The plan is to go to Poe Beach for a few days then down to Noumea. We
have hired a small van, so have room for another couple of kiters as
well as the accommodation at Poe. You would have to sort out your own
accommodation in Noumea and flights though. Air NZ had some specials
for $550 return not too long ago.

The week of 1st November has midday high tides. I have heard that it
is local holidays, but doubt that will affect us. We have kited in the
weekends at Noumea before and there seems to be plenty of room, unless
you are wanting to impress people on the beach.

PS. It is can be expensive, but we found that we could get by a lot
cheaper by going to the supermarkets and drinking our duty free
purchases. Dining and drinking out is expensive.
