Greetings fellow Weblocks users,

I am pleased to announce that I have (finally!) launched my Weblocks-powered Open Source crowdfunding site, BountyOSS.  Check it out:

Check it out!

A site that is sorely needed! I hope it will gain a lot of traction. I myself will post a Qt4 video player project there soon. :)

I found a bug on the FAQ page: a link leads to https://bountyoss.com/%22/about%22 which is non-existent. Looks like a quoting problem.

Are you going to enhance the design as well? It's functional and clean enough, but could be a bit flashier. :)

Excellent!

Whoops, thanks... fixed.

Yes, I know it needs some work.  I've been mostly focused on the functionality to this point.  I think I really need to hire a designer.  On the other hand, "functional and clean" is exactly the look I want.  Maybe it just needs some subtle touches, like a textured background.

Do you have any specific suggestions?

The first thing I want there is some way to get notified, ideally
via email, when new projects are approved/added. I'm not the sort
of person that's going to remember to re-check this site every few
weeks, but I am the sort of person that might want to pledge.

Yes, I agree that email notifications are important, and the site already uses them for various purposes and I'm already planning to add more.

That said, my thinking on new proposal notifications is that they're not as useful as they may sound.  There are so many Open Source projects out there that the probability of an arbitrary one being interesting to any given person is relatively small.  Therefore, I expect that by far the most common way that potential contributors will learn about new proposals is that they'll already be part of the user community for some project, and an announcement will go out on that project's mailing list (or whatever).

For example, there are (alas) not too many people in the world who would be interested in supporting a proposal for a Weblocks extension, so telling all BountyOSS users about such a proposal would be rather superfluous; clearly, this Google group is the best way to reach such people.

Still and all, if there are BountyOSS users who really want to subscribe to a new proposal feed, I'm more than happy to add the feature.  It's not hard.

A good point.

In regards to the design of the site, I would take a look at Twitter Bootstrap: http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/

Very nice work! I will be keeping an eye on it.

Yes, hiring a designer to make it Awesome (while keeping in line with cleanliness and functionality) is the best idea.

Besides that I suggest:

  * provide better spacing
  * center the page
  * choose better fonts
  * get a real memorable logo
  * move menu links of lesser importance to the page bottom
  * don't have a modal preferences form, just fields that can be changed

These just off the top of my head.

Between what?

I know, everyone does this now.  I don't care for it, personally -- I'd rather have everything on the side where I can find it without scrolling.  But I suppose I shouldn't buck the trend.

Is that what your form-widget is for?  I've seen the source file, but haven't tried to figure out what it does or how to use it.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I would add more space between menu items, and also redesign them
to stand out more, possibly using background images.

form-widget fixes a huge lot of gripes that the dataform widget
brings along. It's also way easier to use. But you could also hack
the dataform widget to stay in :form mode all the time, it shouldn't
be difficult.
