Hi, I am somewhat of an expert regarding bicycles and a knowledgeable
layperson regarding ebikes.
1. Any bike with a motor will weigh more than just a bike because you
are adding the weight of the motor. For an ebike there is a motor, a
controller, a battery, and wiring and switches adding at least 20
pounds to the weight of the bike. Depending on the motor and battery
in particular, the added weight will likely be more, but 20 pounds is
a reasonable number. Stromer makes nice $3000 electric bikes that
weigh 60 pounds.
2. The only people I know who have electric bikes either can shell
out thousands of dollars for ebikes with no local support or have some
background in electrical engineering and make their own ebikes from
kits or from scratch (and they still spend thousands.)
3. There is a lot of ebike junk for sale on the internet and at big
box retail stores.
4. torkerusa.com has some nearby dealers listed and they have 2
limited assist electric models. I don't know if dealers stock them or
what quality the electrical components are or what their warranty and
support are. But if you can test ride them you may have a better idea
of what you are looking for.
